Camilla replied calmly, "She told Mom and Dad, and they told me. How could it be fake? They even said the guy's status and background are completely out of your league. He's incredibly successful."
"What!" A sharp wave of panic hit Daniel. "Impossible, that can't be true..."
Camilla pressed her advantage. "Since we aren't officially divorced yet, you obviously have no right to pursue her. So, you'd better agree to sign the papers quickly. Once you're a free man, you can go after her."
Daniel never had much of a backbone.
Deep down, he actually wanted to get divorced.
But Barbara's parents had pressured him against it, and Jackson White had berated him, spelling out the severe financial consequences of the split.
So, he had backed down.
But now, hearing that Barbara might marry someone else, he couldn't sit still.
He figured he didn't care about Camilla anyway.
And since they hadn't even consummated the marriage, it was fine.
He could still win Barbara back.
As for the company's stock or the public fallout from a divorce, he couldn't care less anymore.
"Fine!" Daniel snapped. "Once I confirm the truth, I'll sign the papers!"
"How exactly are you going to confirm it?" Camilla pushed. "We can't keep dragging this out."
"Barbie said she's coming back for the holidays. It won't be long now. When she gets back, we'll see if this 'boyfriend' actually exists!"
"So it's a deal. Once you confirm she has a boyfriend, you agree to the divorce?"
"Yes!"
Securing a firm answer, Camilla hung up the phone.
She was absolutely certain that whatever romantic feelings she once had for Daniel were dead and buried.
In hindsight, that old crush had merely been a desperate clinging to the first person who showed her kindness.
As a naive teenager, she hadn't understood what real attraction felt like.
Now she did, but... it was too late.
Regardless, things were finally moving in the right direction.
Camilla gave a noncommittal hum.
The mere thought of letting a man get close to her right now made her stomach knot. The last thing she wanted was a new boyfriend.
Because Camilla arrived early, dinner was ready before six o'clock.
She had just sat down at the dining table when a knock came at the door.
"I'll get it."
Since Camilla practically lived there in her free time, she often helped Susan welcome clients.
She knew her way around the atelier effortlessly.
She walked over and pulled the door open, a warm, professional smile on her lips. "Hello, welcome to—"
The words caught in her throat. Her smile froze.
Lambert?
Why was he here so early?
