She picked up the call.
Daniel’s voice came through loud, angry. “Camilla? So you actually decided to answer your phone! Where have you been?”
He sounded panicked. He couldn’t get in touch with Owen or her, and it was obvious he’d been freaking out.
Camilla just felt numb. She couldn’t even muster the energy to argue anymore. Hearing Daniel’s voice only made her feel sick.
“It’s over, Daniel. I want a divorce,” she said, flat and emotionless. “Be at City Hall tomorrow morning at eight.”
“What are you talking about?” He took a breath, trying to calm down, his tone turning soft, almost pleading. “Camilla, you’d had too much to drink. I took you to the lounge so you could rest, then I couldn’t reach you. How could I not be worried?”
“You took me to the lounge? Is that what we’re calling it now?” Camilla pushed herself upright, her voice climbing before she could stop it. “Don’t act like you didn’t dump me into another man’s bed.”
She’d wanted to stay calm, to keep it together. But the pain, the anger, the twisted sense of betrayal—it all spilled out.
Daniel hesitated, guilt flashing for a second. Then he tried to cover it. “What are you even saying? That’s not what happened. Why would I ever do something like that?”
Camilla felt like a fool for ever trusting him. How could she have loved someone so spineless? He couldn’t even admit to what he’d done.
“You know exactly what you did. Should I call him up and have him tell you to your face?”
That clearly rattled Daniel. Everyone knew Owen treated women well, and if Camilla told him everything...
Daniel started to panic. If he lost Owen’s support now, everything would come crashing down.
Her heart felt like it had turned to stone. She waited for him to finish, then said simply, “We’re done. Let’s get a divorce.”
“You still want a divorce?” Daniel’s voice rose, desperate now. “I didn’t want any of this either! Look, I won’t even blame you for what happened. I’ll let it go. I can accept you, even after this!”
“You can accept me?” Camilla let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “Daniel, you are absolutely disgusting. I must have been out of my mind to ever fall for you. After tomorrow, we go our own ways. The divorce is happening and then I never want to see you again.”
Divorce wasn’t such a big deal for Daniel, not really. But with Barbara in the mix, he couldn’t help but worry. What if she got mad about the divorce? She was impossible to please when she was angry.
He stalled for time. “Let me think about it, okay? I’ll give you my answer in the morning.”
Camilla heard the click as he hung up. For a moment, she just sat there, then let out a short, quiet laugh. How pitiful she was, how ridiculous her life had become. But not anymore. This was the last time she’d ever let herself live like this.
