“Yes, but it’s not completely my fault.” Daniel sounded almost desperate. “Barbie, please don’t be mad at me. She’s my wife, but I’ve never even touched her. If I let some other guy do it, isn’t it all the same in the end? Who gets married and lives like strangers? I really didn’t have any other choice.”
From a woman’s point of view, what Daniel did was just disgusting. If it had been her going through it, Barbara would’ve been furious. But this time, it was happening to Camilla, and all Barbara felt was a dark sense of satisfaction. She remembered all the pain she’d suffered, and now she wanted Camilla to go through so much more—to truly pay for everything, a hundred times over. Maybe some things never really belonged to Camilla after all. Camilla had stolen her happiness, and now it seemed like life was finally paying her back.
Barbara snapped, “You went way too far. Daniel, I never imagined you could do something like this.”
Daniel shrank from her anger, looking miserable. “Barbie, please don’t say that. I didn’t have any other options. At that moment, what could I have done? Tell me.”
“Camilla is your wife. How could you do this to her?”
“Yeah, she’s my wife, but I don’t have any real feelings for her.” Daniel’s voice softened, almost pleading. “Barbie, if you were my wife, I would never let something like this happen, no matter what.”
Barbara bit back a smile, secretly enjoying the situation, but her voice stayed sharp. “Camilla’s my sister. You still did this to her? How is she now?”
“She’s really set on divorcing me.” Daniel winced, guilt etched across his face. “Honestly, I shouldn’t have married her at all. If it wasn’t to put your mind at ease—”
“So now it’s my fault?” Barbara cut him off, not hiding the irritation.
“No, no,” Daniel said quickly. “You were worried about your parents. You didn’t want to hurt Camilla, and I just wanted to help you. I’m not blaming you, I swear. But Barbie… I really want a divorce.”
“But I want a divorce too…”
“What good will that do?” Barbara ticked through the consequences, her voice cool and steady. “The minute you announce a divorce, the company stock is going to get shaky, the board will start whispering behind your back, and both our parents are going to be furious. None of them will ever agree to this.”
Barbara was just being practical, and everything she said was true. Daniel fell silent, chewing on her words.
Barbara pressed on, calm and relentless, “Yes, what you did was wrong. But it’s already happened. There’s no way to turn back time. You should talk to Camilla, make her see reason. If you two divorce now, it won’t just look bad—it’ll make everything so much worse for her. If word gets out, how is she supposed to live with that?”
Daniel let out a heavy sigh. “I never even liked her. Now that she’s slept with another man, there’s no way I can go back. Barbie, I’m getting a divorce. I have to.”
