Camilla froze.
For a moment, she wondered if she was seeing things.
Lambert? What was he doing here?
Even Latonia was caught off guard when she climbed into the car. She blinked at the sight of Lambert behind the wheel.
Since when did Lambert drive? She couldn’t remember him ever driving himself anywhere.
He caught Camilla’s surprise in the rearview mirror. Unbothered, he started the engine and asked, “Are you alright?”
Latonia, still a little frazzled, turned to Camilla before answering him. “Camilla, I was with Lambert when I got the call. We decided to come together.”
Camilla just nodded. She wasn’t in the mood to say much.
Latonia had already been at the station for a couple of hours. Did that mean Lambert had been waiting all this time?
She almost asked how they had found out what happened, but really, she already knew the answer. The bodyguards Daniel mentioned had to be the ones Lambert sent.
What was he trying to do?
Camilla said nothing about it, and Latonia finally replied to Lambert, “We just have to wait for the injury report.”
Lambert met Camilla’s eyes in the mirror for a split second. He didn’t say another word.
Camilla immediately dropped her gaze, feeling a sharp jolt in her chest.
After about twenty minutes, they pulled up to Latonia’s place.
As they got out, Lambert lowered his window and told Camilla, “Don’t worry too much. Try to get some rest.”
She watched his car drive away, only then letting herself exhale.
Latonia’s apartment was pristine, almost like it belonged in a magazine. Everything was perfectly neat, though it felt a little empty—no cozy signs of daily life.
A man stood there, tall and broad—and unmistakable.
Lambert.
He wore a black shirt, sleeves rolled up over strong, elegant arms, and a gray apron circled his slim waist. He moved with surprising ease as he chopped vegetables, long fingers working steadily. His long legs and powerful build made him look out of place in a kitchen, but strangely, it suited him.
But Camilla’s heart raced—not with admiration, but with anxiety. Why was Lambert here again? Where was Latonia?
She thought about the yacht, that kiss, the awkward gift at dinner, the men in black, and how he’d waited outside for her earlier. Now, somehow, he was in Latonia’s kitchen, as if he belonged here—as if her life had suddenly become entwined with his.
None of this made sense. She didn’t want this. She didn’t want her world turned upside down by things she couldn’t control.
She tried to slip away, stepping back quietly, but her foot caught the edge of a metal trash can. It rattled loudly in the stillness.
Lambert heard it and turned, his eyes landing on her.
