Halle actually felt a bit of calm from it, like a quiet, peaceful moment in time.
"My son is getting more and more out of line. As his dad, I need to push him harder."
A message from James came right after.
When Halle saw it, the corners of her lips lifted without her noticing.
How could James have so much fun playing with a dog?
She didn't reply. She just turned off her phone and arrived at the Bowman residence.
The reason Halle and Edgar got along so well when they were young was that his family environment was really nice. Hayley and Tyler were very kind to her and treated her like their own daughter. Every time she came over, Halle always felt a comforting warmness.
But Tyler had higher expectations for Edgar. Edgar didn't like the pressure and didn't want to stay home much. Still, compared to Halle's own irresponsible parents, this kind of family life already made her jealous.
Just like before, as soon as Halle arrived, Hayley had already made the house neat and beautiful. On the way, she kept asking where Halle was. The moment Halle got out of the car, Hayley was already there to greet her with a smile, her eyes full of love.
Seeing Hayley made Halle think Edgar was really awful. He had so coldly thrown away all those years of their relationship. He did wrong and still didn't have the courage to take responsibility.
If Halle told Hayley the truth on her own, she really couldn't bear it. It would even feel a bit like she was playing the victim. And if Hayley then forced Edgar to admit his mistake, Edgar might not even do it willingly.
So, Edgar had to be the one to take responsibility for what he had done.
If Hayley later blamed her for staying silent all this time, Halle would still apologize.
"I've finally been waiting for you. Come on in, I made all your favorite dishes." Hayley held her hand. There wasn't even a hint of acting—she was just genuinely proud.
"Thank you, Mrs. Bowman," Halle said.
"Oh, don't be so polite. We're family," Hayley said with a bright smile, looking at Halle more and more fondly.
Halle was about to carry her suitcase when Hayley quickly stopped her. A maid in the house rushed over to help instead, afraid Halle would have to do anything hard.
But even after Halle arrived, Edgar still wasn't home.
She had watched Halle grow up. Halle had always been sweet and well-behaved as a child. As she grew older, she became even more graceful and capable. She was smart, reliable, and very talented at a young age. Honestly, who wouldn't want a daughter like that?
What kind of boyfriend gets engaged and then immediately goes overseas, leaving his fiancée alone in the country? He barely came back over the years, and when he did, he never stayed long... He always used work as an excuse, saying he needed to build his own path.
Of course, having ambition wasn't bad, but he still needed to think about his family and fiancée. You could still learn a lot while staying in Drakoria.
Hayley had nothing but love for Halle. Seeing her own son be so disappointing, she wanted to drag Edgar over and force him to apologize properly to Halle.
So over the years, the whole family had put a lot of pressure on Edgar, telling him to come back earlier and not let Halle wait forever.
How many years can a girl wait during her best years?
If Edgar never came back, Hayley would also feel too ashamed to keep holding onto the engagement, since it was her son who had wronged Halle.
Luckily, Edgar finally came back this year. They were both twenty-five now, still young. Hayley was worried Halle might feel wronged and want to cancel the engagement—but instead, they still had feelings for each other, and were even preparing to get married.
When Hayley heard the news, she was truly happy from the bottom of her heart. No matter what, she, of course, wanted to see them get married and have children. That was every mother's wish.
"Let's not wait for him anymore. Go wash your hands and eat. Don't stay hungry."
Halle always felt like, in Hayley's eyes, she was still a child who hadn't grown up yet—someone who couldn't take care of herself and would forget to eat. But none of that was fake. Hayley truly cared about her. And that warmth filled Halle's heart, too.
Since she was young, Halle had never been close to her mother. With Hayley treating her so well, she slowly realized she actually enjoyed being cared for like this.
