Juliet froze. “What?”

Ayla didn’t back down. “Kaleb’s company fell apart because Troy told Zane to do it. And you want me to beg Troy for help? Don’t you think that’s a joke?”
She went on, her voice steady. “And about Zane-you’re his stepmom now. Bringing this up in front of me felt like a humiliation. Juliet, don’t tell me you didn’t know it was Zane’s doing.”
Juliet’s expression turned cold. “Ayla, I’m trying to look out for you. Do you have to fight me on everything?”
Ayla let out a sharp laugh. “If this is what you call caring, then I’ll be honest, I don’t need it. Everyone has a limit and someone they want to protect. Kaleb is my only brother. His problems are my problems. And I can’t stand your fake sympathy.”
Juliet was truly angry now. “I’m your aunt. I never wanted to see his company fall apart. But it already happened. What’s the point of digging into the past? What matters is fixing it. Troy caused the mess, but he also has the power to help you. Why not let him?”
Ayla raised a brow. “So now you’re blaming me for fighting you? For taking this seriously?”
“Yes!” Juliet snapped.
Ayla took a breath, then said, “Kaleb was bullied. I’m his sister. Am I not even allowed to feel angry? Or is it because your stepson is involved? You get to protect your kid, but I’m not allowed to protect my brother?”
Juliet’s cheeks flushed red. She finally understood; Ayla’s attitude toward her had changed.
Ayla wasn’t letting anything slide anymore, and Juliet was no longer/someone she cared about pleasing.
Juliet forced herself to stay calm. “I told you. I’m here to help you.”
“How?” Ayla asked.
“Skyla can help you,” Juliet said.
Ayla laughed outright.
Juliet’s face turned grim. “What’s so funny? If you hadn’t interfered, Skyla and Troy wouldn’t have missed each other for three whole years, Skyla holds no grudges and still wants to help you. You should feel grateful. Ayla, stop being stubborn. Don’t let your personal feelings drag your brother’s company into bankruptcy.”
This time Ayla actually laughed out loud. She looked at Juliet’s beautiful, polished face and wondered how she had become like this. After a long moment, she said, “So this is why you asked me out today?”
Juliet’s anger flared. “I’m doing this for your sake!”
Ayla leaned in slightly. “You’ve worked in both the entertainment world and the business world. Don’t tell

me you don’t understand Kaleb. Your nephew can’t swallow his pride. He’s stubborn, proud, and hates owing anyone. If Skyla steps in and saves him, it’ll hurt worse than the bankruptcy. The next time Kaleb runs into Zane, he won’t even be able to lift his head. Do you know how painful that would be for him? How humiliating? Have you even thought about that, Aunt Juliet?”
At a table behind them, angled just right to overhear, sat a young man wearing a cap, hoodie, and mask- completely hidden, yet listening to every word.
Kaleb sat with his head lowered, slowly stirring his coffee.
He heard every word.
In his heart, he let out a short, bitter laugh. Ayla sure talks a lot.
If it was him, he’d throw the whole cup of coffee in Juliet’s face.
But the moment that thought flashed by, his eyes suddenly burned red.
His jaw tightened, achy and sore.
Ever since their mom passed, Ayla got married, and as for their father-Kaleb had already erased that man from his life.
In one instant, Kaleb became completely alone. He hated the whole world. He grew cold, angry, and cynical. And he hated Ayla for marrying so easily, leaving him behind. He was her brother.
Kaleb even treated Ayla like she didn’t exist, cutting off every connection. Even when she looked for him, he refused to see her.
But now-for the first time-he understood something with painful clarity. Ayla might have married on impulse, but she had never stopped loving him.
In this entire world, only Ayla treated him this well. Only her actions-every single one-he believed came from real care, not some hidden motive.
When he ran into trouble, the one who caught him at the bottom wasn’t a friend, wasn’t some relative from afar.
It was Ayla. His sister.
Ayla had lost her mother too. She had suffered the same pain he did. Yet she still had to gather her strength to protect him-a brother who couldn’t pull his life together.
When Ayla was hurting, her only brother mocked her and pushed her away. How much did it hurt her
then?
Was she as heartbroken as she said? How sad must she have been?
Kaleb didn’t dare think any further.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
