Ayla could feel Juliet’s hostility toward her and Kaleb. It was cold and cruel, like Juliet wanted to break the both of them.
She lost all interest in eating. Ayla said firmly, “Kaleb is young and full of fire. He’s not afraid of anything. I won’t let you clip his wings. If you try to trap him again and push him to the edge, don’t blame me for cutting you off.”
Ayla let out a cold laugh. “But don’t worry. I’ve already taken care of everything for Kaleb. You don’t need to stress yourself out. Just focus on your stepkids.”
Juliet slammed her hand on the table. “How dare you think of me like that?”
“I didn’t think anything,” Ayla said. “I just didn’t fall into your trap. And I’m saying out loud what you’ve actually done.”
Juliet was shaking with anger. “Ayla, you’re so heartless. I’m your aunt, but you see me as someone this terrible? Do you know how much that hurts me?”
Ayla was unmoved. “I’ve wanted to tell you this for a long time. You just can’t face reality. When I said you pushed me away because of Skyla, you denied it. You took Zane’s side but still expected me to treat you the same as before. Why can’t you admit you hurt me and Kaleb?”
Juliet’s anger faded like a bucket of ice water poured straight over her.
No one likes facing who they really are, and others often see it more clearly than we do.
Ayla was right.
Juliet knew it.
She just didn’t want to admit it and face it.
Ayla said calmly, “Stop acting like I broke your heart. It looks fake! And if you keep this up, I might start thinking even worse of you.”
Juliet had lived long enough to collect herself fast. She straightened up and studied Ayla again.
Not long ago, at the senior care center, Ayla had cried in front of her-small, fragile, and heartbroken, like
a girl abandoned by everyone. But now, she stood here calm, sharp, and unshaken.
A flicker of jealousy rose quietly in Juliet’s chest.
She hid it well when she noticed it.
Juliet gave a strange little smile. “You really are Juliana’s daughter.”
Juliana’s daughter-bright, steady, impossible to crush. Even a painful marriage couldn’t break her. Instead, she still had the strength to protect the ones she loved.

She lifted her bag and stood. “Sorry for ruining your appetite. Enjoy your lunch. I already paid for it.”
Then she turned and left.
Ayla watched her walk away, then looked back at the untouched food in front of her.
The dishes still smelled good, but she felt nothing. She was grateful Kaleb hadn’t come along.
If he knew what happened, he would’ve blown up on the spot and then yelled at her for even meeting Juliet.
He’d probably say, “Why come here just to get yelled at? Seriously? Are you a fool?”
Ayla lived a tiring life. Her job wore her out, and she never went on diets.
Since she wasn’t full yet, she simply kept eating.
But she didn’t know two people had come to eavesdrop; Kaleb, who slipped in early, and Melody.
Melody knew Ayla didn’t know her, so she boldly sat at the next table.”
She ordered her lunch, ate slowly, and stretched her neck every few seconds to listen.
By the time she heard everything, she was completely relieved.
Ayla was divorced. She had an ex-husband, a brother whose company was about to go bankrupt and parents who clearly weren’t around; otherwise, they would have shown up when she got a divorce. She had no parents to support her, and her brother had failed in business. That meant her family background was terrible.
Ayla’s job was a secretary. Sure, she sounded smart when she talked, but she was still just a secretary.
She had no money, no power, and faced a whole lot of problems.
And this is the woman she was supposed to compete with? Melody almost laughed.
Herman was right. Whether someone could end up being Draven’s partner didn’t depend on effort. It depended on his feeling. But marriage? That came down to family background.
And Draven’s mother? Strong, sharp, and impossible to please. There was no way she’d accept a divorced woman like Ayla.
Meanwhile, Melody came from a good family. She’d never dated anyone. She was a well-known young
artist.
Her background, her status, her talent-she had everything. What did Ayla have? Nothing.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
