Chapter 271 Lock This Down

James was surrounded by all kinds of people. Plenty of them chased status, and very few of them were sincere. Someone like Ayla was rare to him, and that was exactly why she drew him in.

Once James decided someone was a friend, he held nothing back. He understood Ayla well, so he said, “If anything ever happens to you in this life, just come to me. I’ll definitely help.”

Ayla answered just as sincerely, “Same here.”

After being praised by Ayla, James couldn’t have been happier. Even though Halle stayed on guard around him and he kept running into walls, he stopped deliberately saying things to irritate her.

James felt like he was basically a dog. Stroke him the right way, and he wouldn’t act annoying.

Ayla’s original intention had been to let Halle see that James wasn’t a bad person, to ease some of the tension. Instead, it had the opposite effect. Halle got jealous. “What about me? Where do I rank in your heart?” She was genuinely anxious.

Ayla paused before saying, “First. Absolutely first!”

James chimed in, “Hey, that’s not fair. You just praised me! And now you’re getting snatched away by another woman again!” He refused to be the only one hurt. “Draven, are you gonna do something about this? Your assistant just had me hooked, and now she’s running off with someone else! She’s a total heartbreaker!”

Draven ignored him.

Seeing James flustered instantly put Halle in a better mood.

In private, Halle really liked sticking close to Ayla. Ayla wasn’t used to it at first, but Halle was thick- skinned, and Ayla gradually got used to it.

Halle got carried away for a moment, and since this was her own home and not a formal setting, she instinctively wrapped an arm around Ayla and planted a hard kiss’ on her cheek.

Ayla cupped Halle’s face and kissed her cheek back.

James and Draven were shocked by the scene.

They suddenly felt like they were intruding.

“Here, no bones.” Draven used the serving utensils to pick out a piece of fish and placed it in front of Ayla, cutting off the girls’ bonding moment. “Eat it while it’s hot.”

Ayla had been trying to balance the rivalry between Halle and James. Suddenly seeing the tender fish in her plate, she froze for a second. Draven removed the bones for me.

When did he start doing that?

Those flawless hands of his could do something this meticulous?

James was also stunned, like he’d discovered a whole new world. “Damn. You’d make a good husband.”

James whistled. “I want some too, I want some too-”

Draven shot him a warning look. “Shut up.” Then he picked another piece of fish, carefully removed the bones again, and right in front of everyone, placed it on Ayla’s plate.

Just like before, once the fish was on her plate, Draven would simply order, “Eat it while it’s hot.”

Like she was under a spell, Ayla would quickly eat it all, then slurp some stew.

Only after it settled did she realize she was actually hungry.

And Wilfrid’s cooking really was excellent.

Being waited on by Draven like this was something Ayla had never imagined. She reacted a beat too late. “Thank you!”

James couldn’t bear to watch anymore. “I mean, Draven, look how close Ayla and Halle are, hugging and kissing whenever they want. I just asked you for one piece of fish, and you won’t give it to me. Are you still my friend?”

Draven said nothing and calmly placed some mashed potatoes on James’s plate.

“That’s more like it!” James ate with total satisfaction.

Watching this, Ayla remembered that night they played poker. Draven had ordered a ton of takeout. None of it was really his favorite, and he hadn’t even asked what everyone wanted. He’d just quietly ordered everything.

Because he’d already memorized what each person liked.

Draven had always been attentive.

Halle was beyond shocked. When she’d seen Draven yesterday, he had been all CEO. Every move he made had Conrad trembling. His presence was overwhelming, powerful, and imposing.

But now, he felt so down-to-earth. The contrast was so sharp it was almost jarring. Halle felt like she didn’t even recognize him.

James shamelessly acted cute, and Draven actually indulged him.

James even accepted it as if it was only natural. Clearly, Draven had taken care of him plenty before.

Draven didn’t talk much, yet he managed to look after everyone around him.

This was the first time Halle had seen what he was like in private. She was genuinely stunned.

She’d thought Draven was cold and detached before. Now she didn’t think that at all.
