Right now, Draven looked like a wild animal that had been temporarily tamed. He had that sharp, dangerous edge-but right now, he acted like he was calm and harmless around her.
But a pleased predator wasn’t the same as a harmless pet. Once he got what he wanted, he always pushed for more.
Ayla was still breathless from how hard he’d kissed her. Then he leaned in again, flashing that wicked grin. “You better text me. You better call me.”
She blinked. “Don’t I already text you every day?”
“You told Herman. But you didn’t tell me.”
His tone tightened. Then he leaned in and bit her ear, not too hard, but not gentle either. “Herman’s the one who told me about it.”
Ayla shoved at him, annoyed. “You’re so petty, Mr. Storm.”
She ran her hand down his abs and teased, “Why do you always want everything?”
Draven caught her hand and held it in place. “Just say yes, okay?”
He rarely asked for anything. She was in a great mood. There was no reason to say no. So she said yes.
To her, Draven was the beautiful one. He was the kind of man you just wanted to spoil.
But beautiful could still be dangerous. And she was almost out of energy to deal with him.
Every time Ayla thought about Phil, her stomach turned. That sick feeling always came with this deep, uncontrollable rage.
She couldn’t dwell on it too long. If she did, the anger and disgust would eat her alive. It was like her whole nervous system would short out.
Phil was worse than Eric. Way worse. He’d spent decades playing with her mother’s feelings. That alone was enough to make both her and Kaleb hate him forever.
And that wasn’t even the full extent of the damage.

He was their father. That made it even harder to forgive. As his kids, they couldn’t understand how he’d done those things to them.
Draven’s presence helped. Just enough to keep her steady. Just enough so she didn’t lose it completely.
But she didn’t even want to think about how Kaleb would take it if he ever found out.
He’d lose it. He’d go straight for a knife.
He wouldn’t be able to move on.
Not ever.
Lately, Laura had noticed that Troy had been glued to his phone more than usual.
Every time it made a sound, he grabbed it like he’d been waiting for it. But once he saw the screen, his face always turned dark. And when he answered, his voice was cold and harsh.
Laura didn’t dare push him.
It had already been a few months since the divorce. She’d come to terms with it. But
sometimes, it still felt weird. The whole house had Ayla’s presence all over it. Every corner held a memory. And those memories always reminded Laura of how much Ayla had done for them.
She still slipped sometimes, calling her “Mrs. Winston.” Troy never corrected her.
Still, she made sure to watch her words more carefully now.
Even Troy’s taste had changed. He used to be so picky. Now, if it wasn’t disgusting, he’d eat it.
But Laura still had work to do.
Troy was holed up in his study. She made him a drink and went to bring it in.
When she opened the door, she saw him holding a glass. It had a pine pattern and looked delicate. She immediately recognized it. That was the glass Ayla had broken in two. Mr. Winston had it repaired and left it in the study.
Troy didn’t look up until she set the coffee on the desk. Then he frowned. “Why didn’t you knock?”

“I-I did,” Laura said quietly.
:
His frown deepened. He set the glass down and took a sip from the drink.
Laura stayed put. She clearly wanted to say something.
Troy glanced up. “What is it?”

Laura took a breath. “Mr. Winston, that’s Ayla’s glass, right? You’ve been holding it a lot lately. Are you … thinking about her?”
Troy let out a cold laugh. “Yeah, I’m thinking about her. Thinking about what she did to me. When she gets back, I’m going to settle it. This stupid glass? It’s here to make sure I don’t forget.”
That glass was something Ayla had given to Draven. There was no way Troy cared about it.
Laura went pale. “Won’t that scare her off?”
But was it just a broken glass? The way he set it down earlier, he’d handled it so gently. Still, his face was all anger.
Troy didn’t meet her eyes. “I’ll bring it up when she’s in a good mood.”
If Laura heard him right, that meant he was planning to sweet-talk Ayla first.
Get her in a good place… then spring it on her?
Troy took another sip and stared at his phone. Still no alerts, “Get out. I don’t need anything else.”
Laura mumbled a soft “okay” and stepped out. She had just made it halfway down the hall when she heard the ringtone.
It rang sharp and loud. Not on silent. Not on vibrate. That was new. He never kept his phone on loud. He had to be waiting on something big.
Laura turned back to look.
Troy snatched the phone off the desk. The second he saw the name on the screen, his face twisted into something even uglier.
