Maybe it was because he'd been misunderstood by outsiders too many times, but he'd started paying extra attention, almost instinctively, to keeping the right boundaries when he was with Bria.
On top of that, Emmett had already concluded that he did have some feelings for Bria.
Either way, time passed quickly, and something had quietly changed.
A month of work had finally wrapped up. Kaleb pinched the bridge of his nose. He had a day off tomorrow, and tonight, he was going to dinner and a movie with Bria.
After ten days, they were meeting again.
Even during work today, whenever his focus slipped, he'd find himself thinking about it. He really did take meeting Bria seriously.
Of course, he was looking forward to it. He was genuinely curious about what Bria was trying to do.
He would observe quietly, play along with her, but he wouldn't take the initiative to say anything.
Today, Kaleb drove to pick Bria up.
It was rare to see her dressed so professionally. She wore a tailored women's suit, her black hair styled in loose waves cascading down her back, and a pair of silver-framed glasses perched on her high, straight nose.
They were both 23 this year. Still young, but growing, changing, slowly becoming more mature.
Over the past two years, Kaleb had changed a lot. Even he could feel it.
Bria seemed to have changed a little too.
Kaleb's gaze lingered on her glasses for a few extra seconds.
Bria had spent the entire day in meetings with her investment team. She looked worn out, her hair a little messy, and her nerves had been frayed all day.
But the moment she saw Kaleb sitting quietly in the car waiting for her, more than half of the irritation in her chest faded away. The longer she spent around him, the more she realized he had this calming presence. She could say whatever she wanted, and he'd listen attentively, never making her feel brushed off. That feeling was grounding, steady.
She had no idea how someone so young could have such a stable personality.
The moment she got in the car, a smile was already on Bria's face.
Kaleb asked, "Are you nearsighted?”
"A little. Just over 100 degrees in both eyes. It doesn't affect my daily life.” Bria was also using the glasses as a prop to boost her presence. Establishing authority was something she'd been exposed to since she was young. She could fool around however she wanted normally, but when it came to serious matters, she couldn't afford to slip up.
Of course, she didn't actually need the glasses. When Bria's face went cold, she was already intimidating enough. She just wanted to give Kaleb something new, a different kind of impression.
This past month, she'd fully cooperated with Kaleb and hadn't let him notice a single flaw.
She still remembered his expression back then. A little dazed, surprised, and then confused once he recognized her. It wasn't like the sharp, cold look he usually gave her.
And her own gaze had dropped all its calculation, all its filters, good or bad. There had only been surprise. Just that. Unexpected.
Those had been completely genuine emotions.
Bria hadn't expected that she'd seen the real Kaleb so early on.
The movie pulled her attention back again. The heroine was crying her eyes out, the music swelling higher and higher, almost to the point of tearing your heart apart.
Maybe it was the story pulling her in, but Bria found herself getting a little sentimental too.
She'd given herself a one-month deadline. Once that month passed, her interest and whatever feelings she had for Kaleb would fade with time. She'd completely lose interest in him.
She could even clearly feel that, at this point, taking Kaleb down would only require a carefully planned confession, or maybe an accidental moment of physical closeness. The thin barrier between them could be broken at any time.
The only regret was that she still hadn't lost interest in Kaleb.
And that was honestly terrifying.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
