Riley smiled. “They found a military drone Samuel used about five years ago. The team’s retrieving it now. If it still holds any stored data, it could help. I just have a feeling. We’re getting close.”

Sebastian’s face went pale. The hand Riley was holding under the water had started to tremble.

“Does it hurt that much?” Riley asked gently.

Sebastian turned to her, voice low. “If I told you it did, would you feel bad for me?”

Riley looked up at him. “You’re my boyfriend. Of course I’d feel bad if you were in pain. But that doesn’t mean I want you treating yourself like you’re disposable. I want you to take care of yourself—not just for me, but for you.”

Sebastian froze, his eyes meeting hers.

“Vince is my teammate—more like a little brother. I knew him long before I ever met you,” Riley explained.

Once they were both in the kitchen, Riley got to work–rinsing vegetables, slicing meat, and prepping ingredients. Sebastian leaned quietly against the wall, watching her every move.

He’d never thought someone bustling around a kitchen could be so mesmerizing.
