Chapter 216 The Lead
Vince’s gaze burned like fire, and Shawn’s eyes were cold as ice.
Caught between them, Lara was utterly miserable.
These two–uncle and nephew–were clearly sent to torment her!
Maybe good looks didn’t necessarily make a man feel like a breath of spring breeze. Sometimes, they were more like walking into fire and getting stabbed on the way down.
“I only undid a couple buttons so he could breathe better!” Lara defended herself.
Then she jabbed a finger in Vince’s direction. “And I told you already—even if he stripped naked and started dancing in front of me, I wouldn’t be the slightest bit interested!”
Shawn raised an eyebrow. That seemed to ease something in his expression.
Vince, on the other hand, looked offended. “Excuse me Strip down and dance for you? What do you take me for?
Lara could only sigh.
Fine. Let him be mad. All she wanted was to prove she wasn’t
into him.

Shawn looked at her again, more serious now. “If you’re not into Vince, then why are you getting a hotel room with him?”
“We were following someone, okay?” Lara rubbed her temples. “The woman who just left the room next door–her name’s She’s my best friend’s mortal enemy.”
“It’s true, Uncle Shawn,” Vince chimed in. “You think I’d come to a place like this with her otherwise? I’ve got standards. You know the type of woman I’m into.”
Shawn did know. Vince had a thing for Riley, his former unit commander. After she got married, Vince even left the country
for a while.
“If that’s all, I’m heading out,” Vince said, standing up.
“Wait a sec!” Lara called after him. “That man who was with Bella today–don’t forget to check him out. I think there’s some kind of financial blackmail going on. He must have something on her.”
“Yeah, I got it.” Vince waved a hand and left without looking
back.
The room fell quiet.
It was only then that Lara realized–now it was just her and Shawn.

“Well, I should get going too,” she said, inching toward the door. But Shawn reached out, long arm blocking her path.
“You’re not going to explain any of this?” he asked, eyes lockd on hers.
She blinked. “Explain what? Oh! The room, right? Don’t worry about it. I already paid.”
Shawn’s jaw tensed, a vein pulsing at his temple.
Of all the people in the world, it seemed like only she could piss him off this effortlessly.
“So let me get this straight,” Shawn said, voice low and
dangerously calm. “You booked a hotel room with a man just to spy on someone?”
“I was with Vince,” Lara argued. “It’s not like I grabbed some random guy off the street.”
“Vince isn’t a man?” The veins on his temple bulged even more.
Lara was stunned. To her, Vince was more like an anno
brother.

“What if it hadn’t been Vince?” Shawn pressed. “What if it were your colleague? Your assistant? Any other man. Would you have dragged him into a hotel room, too?” He leaned in suddenly,

eyes boring into hers.
Lara instinctively pulled her shoulders in. The way he was staring at her–it sent a shiver down her spine.
“Of course not…” she muttered. “Vince and I both care a
Riley and can’t stand Bella. That’s the only reason I asked him to come. And besides, I don’t even like Vince. I would never make a move on him.”
Shawn’s eyes darkened. “Then who would you make a move
on?”
“Definitely not you,” Lara blurted out.
But the second those words left her mouth, she saw Shawn’s expression cloud over.
