A flicker of something dangerous passed through Shawn’s eyes, and in an instant, his expression shifted–grim and lethal.

Wren went to the detention center to visit Bella.
She had only been in Washington a few days when Bella was arrested.
Now Miranda and Logan were running themselves ragged trying to find her a lawyer–but the four major law firms in the city had already shut their doors. They were down to calling in favors from outoftown attorneys.
The first branch of the Sinclair family had washed their hands of Bella entirely.
It had taken Wren pulling more strings than she cared to admit just to get permission to visit her in the detention center.
“It’s all Riley’s fault,” Bella hissed the moment she sat down in the meeting room. “If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be rotting in
here!”
“I’m afraid the Anderson family won’t be able to help ou,“15:54 Wren said after a pause. The family’s stance was already crystal

clear–they wanted no part in Bella’s mess.

Bella’s eyes narrowed, but she didn’t look surprised. “Doesn’t matter. I still have Bryce. I’m carrying his child–he’ll have to help me. I’ve already applied for bail on account of my pregnancy. I’ll be out of here soon enough.”
“You’re pregnant?” Wren’s brows shot up.
“Yes.” Bella’s mouth curled into a cold smile. “This baby is my lucky star. Bryce can’t throw me away now.”
Then her gaze sharpened. “Let me give you some free advice- cousin to cousin. Lock Sebastian down, or forget about having a place in the Anderson family.”
Lock him down… If only I could.
Wren left the detention center with a knot between her brows.
Of course she understood what Bella meant. Her standing in the Anderson family had already begun to slip.
Just then, a black sedan eased to a stop in front of her.
Felix stepped out, his voice polite but carrying weight. “Ms. Wren Anderson, Mr. Torres would like to see you.”

that day–since she’d dropped the truth in front of Riley that there was someone else in his heart.
She had hoped those words would split them apart.
But she had just learned from Bella that it was Riley who had orchestrated her imprisonment–and, worse, Sebastian had helped make it happen.
And Bella’s voice still echoed in her head–Wren, Sebastian’s Riley’s shield now. You’ve lost your backing in the Anderson family.
If even Bella could see it so clearly, Wren would be a fool to deny it.
“Mr. Wayne,” Wren asked carefully, “do you know why Sebastian wants to see me?”
“You’ll find out when you see Mr. Torres,” Felix replied smoothly.
A bodyguard opened the car door, his stare hard enough to pin her in place. It was clear–if she didn’t get in, they’d have no problem shoving her inside.
Her pulse skittering, Wren slid into the seat.

Inside, she finally saw him.

Sebastian lounged in a deep leather armchair as if it were a throne, a classic suit framing the sharp lines of his body.
His eyes were cold by nature, but when they rested on Riley, they turned warm–almost hypnotic.
The thought sent a spike of jealousy through Wren. He had never looked at her that way.
What did Riley have that she didn’t?
“Sebastian, did you call me here to take issue with what I said last time?” Wren broke the silence first. “I was just telling the truth. Let’s be honest–your feelings for Riley are only because she’s a substitute for that girl from the past.”
“A substitute?” His mouth twisted into a scoff. “When I want someone, it’s only that person. If it’s not her, it’s pointless…

“But you’ve been searching for that girl for years! You’ve never forgotten her. If Riley isn’t a substitute, how could you fall in love with her so fast?”
“Fast?” His brow lifted, but his eyes darkened. “It’s already taken too long.”

If he’d realized it the moment they met, he would’ve drugged her out of that marriage himself long before she wasted another second in it.
“Wren, I looked for that girl because she saved my life, 1 wanted to repay her. That’s all, I love Riley because she’s Riley.”
Jealousy twisted Wren’s features. “What’s so special about her? Why her?”
“I don’t owe you an answer,” he said, his voice dropping, into something, low and lethal. “I called you here to warn you–if you ever spew that kind of garbage in front of her again, I’ll cut your tongue out.”
Her blood iced over. “You’d do that… for her?”
“For her,” he said flatly, “there’s much worse I’m willing to do, Do you want to find out?”
The death in his eyes made her shiver.
