Chapter 302 Don’t Cry
Confusion flickered in Zane’s eyes. “Have we met bore, Ms. Anderson?”
“I don’t know,” Riley said.
Because she honestly didn’t know if the man in front of her was Samuel or not.
The confusion in Zane’s eyes deepened. She hadn’t said yes or no. She’d said she didn’t know.
But given the current situation, it was better not to make this a bigger scene. A quick private conversation to smooth things over and make this whole mess go away? That was worth it.
“Alright,” Zane agreed.
“There’s a small balcony over there. Let’s ta quieter,” Riley said.
Zane nodded, but Cynthia grabbed his hand. “Zane, you’re really gonna go off alone with her?”
“I’m just going to talk for a bit, then I’ll be right back. It’ll be fine,” Zane said gently.

covered.”
After calming Cynthia down, Zane turned to Riley. “Alright, let’s go, Ms. Anderson.”
Riley blinked hard to hold back the tears and followed Zane toward the balcony.
Cynthia glared at Riley’s retreating back, then turned to
Sebastian with a frown. “Isn’t she your girlfriend, Mr. Torres? And you’re just gonna let her throw herself at another man? I didn’t think you were that understanding.”
Sebastian gave Cynthia a cold look. “You should be grateful Riley stopped me earlier. The Lincoln family backing or not, I would’ve made you pay for that slap.”
Cynthia fumed.
What’s so special about Riley anyway?
And that guy who calls Riley “Rye“? He seems familiar–like I’ve seen him somewhere before.

Riley and Zane reached the small balcony.
It was quiet and empty here. Moonlight spilled across the space, and the peaceful night was a sharp contrast to all the drinking and mingling going on inside the ballroom.
“Alright, Ms. Anderson.” Zane’s voice came from behind her. “What did you want to talk about? Just say it.”
Riley took a deep breath and turned to look at Zane.
The ballroom lights had been one thing, but out here with moonlight falling across his face, he looked different, harder, colder. The way he looked at her–there was nothing there, just
distance.
Nothing like the warmth she remembered.
“Do you know me?” Riley asked, watching face carefully for any reaction.
Zane’s expression didn’t change. “Why? Should I?”
Riley’s hands tightened at her sides. “You look like someone I know. That’s why I’m asking. I heard you came back to the Lincoln family three years ago, so… what were you doing before that?”

“That’s my business,” Zane said flatly. “I don’t see why I need to tell you, Ms. Anderson.”
“I noticed how protective you were of Ms. Linco You two must be really close.” Riley kept pushin have any other sisters?”

“No.” Zane didn’t even hesitate. “Cynthia’s my only sister.”
Something twisted painfully in Riley’s chest, and she felt heat building behind her eyes. Samuel had said those exact words to her once, “Riley’s my only sister.”
She kept questioning herself if he was really not Samuel.
“Are you okay?” Zane seemed to notice something was off.
“I just… I was thinking about my own brother.” Riley’s voice caught. “He always protected me. If anyone hurt me, he’d make them pay for it. But when he needed protection… I couldn’t protect him…”
Staring at his face now, Riley couldn’t stop thinking about that video–seeing Samuel so helpless, dragged away and dumped on the street like he was nothing. That was when the tears came. She couldn’t hold them back anymore.
They fell fast and heavy, one after another.

Zane froze. He clearly hadn’t expected her to just start crying in front of him like this.
He pulled out a handkerchief and held it out to h ery.”
Tey, don’t
Riley stared at the handkerchief through blurry eyes but didn’t take it. She just kept looking at him, crying even harder now.
It reminded her of Samuel. How he used to comfort her when she cried, so gentle with her.
There was so much of Samuel in this man. How could he not be Samuel?
Zane stared at Riley crying in front of him, and something strange stirred in his chest.
It felt wrong somehow, like she wasn’t supposed to be crying like this. She should be strong and decisive, soaring free instead of… whatever this was.
He sighed and pulled out his handkerchief, t. reached over and wiped the tears from her face.
