Riley stopped crying, quickly wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand. “Thank you,” she said to Zane.
“I knew it! You’re trying to seduce Zane, you shameless—” Cynthia rushed forward to hit Riley, but Riley caught her wrist with one hand.
Cynthia cried out in pain.
“Ms. Anderson, please don’t hurt her,” Zane said.
“Fine. Out of respect for you, Mr. Lincoln, I’ll let it go.” Riley released her grip. “But if Ms. Lincoln keeps throwing hands at people, I won’t be so nice next time.”
Sebastian and Vince walked over just then.
Cynthia rubbed her wrist and glared at Riley before turning to mock Sebastian. “Mr. Torres, your girlfriend’s hitting on my brother right in front of you. And you’re just gonna take that?”
Cynthia!” Zane frowned. “Ms. Anderson wasn’t hitti on me2

and I don’t want to hear you say that again.”
“But-”
“And apologize to Ms. Anderson.”
“What? You want me to apologize to her? Why should I?” Cynthia was furious.
“Don’t you think making false accusations deserves an apology?” Vince spoke up. “If you don’t apologize right now, I can guarantee that by tomorrow, there’ll be all sorts of viral posts about you online, Ms. Lincoln. Whether they’re true or not. Well, who knows?”
“You-” Cynthia’s face went pale.
This guy is straight–up threatening me.
But something about him made her think he’d actually follow through. Cynthia came from the Lincoln family, even if it was a branch family, and she’d met plenty of powerful, wealthy people.
This man had that same vibe of authority that people in power
carried.
Her gut told her he was just as dangerous as Sebastian.

“Mr. Torres, you really think I should apologize? You don’t care that your girlfriend’s having private conversations with other men behind your back, doing who knows what?”
Cynthia was trying to use Sebastian to back her up.
She really
But Sebastian just looked at her calmly and sai wants him, then I’ll kidnap Mr. Lincoln and drag him to her myself if I have to.”
“You… you’re insane!” Cynthia ground out through clenched teeth.
Sebastian laughed coldly.

If Zane really wasn’t Riley’s brother, and if Riley wanted a substitute to ease her longing–he’d actually do it.
“Apologize. Now,” Sebastian said icily.
“Cynthia, you went too far today,” Zane add、 1
Cynthia looked like she was about to explode, but she forced out, “Sorry. I shouldn’t have said all that.”
“Then I hope next time, you’ll think before you speak,” Riley

“You-” Cynthia was seething, but she couldn’t do anything about it right now.
“Let’s go, Cynthia.” Zane turned to leave with her, but as he passed Sebastian, he stopped. “Mr. Torres, I’m not just anyone you can kidnap. If you really want to drag me s you’d better have the skills to back it up.”
ere,
“Is that right?” Sebastian said mildly, though his eyes were on Riley.
It was like if Riley decided right now that she wanted Zane, Sebastian would actually go through with it.
“Don’t mind him, Mr. Lincoln. He’s just joking,” Riley said quickly.
“Yeah, just joking,” Sebastian agreed obediently.
He went along with whatever Riley said so easily; it was almost ridiculous.
Zane gave Sebastian a long look. When he’d said that earlier, it hadn’t sounded like a joke at all.
He realized that Riley must be something special to make Sebastian follow her lead like that.

Zane left with Cynthia.
Vince walked up to Riley and noticed her red–rimmed eyes and the tear tracks on her face. “Rye, why were you crying just
now?”
After all, he’d seen her go through hell on missi life–or–death situations—and she’d never cried
before-
“It’s just… when I was alone with Zane, I couldn’t hold it together,” Riley said.
“So is Zane actually Samuel?” Vince asked.
“I don’t know.” Riley shook her head. “When we were talking, I made a few gestures, signals that only Samuel and I would know. But he didn’t react at all.”
If Samuel really had some reason he couldn’t tell her the truth, or if he was being watched and couldn’t speak freely, he would’ve responded to those signals somehow.
But Zane hadn’t reacted at all.
“Plus, I asked him about what happened three years ago, and he dodged the question completely,” she added.
“Then just grab a DNA sample and test it,” Vince said.

“Blood draw or hair sample–either way, you’d have to knock him out first. Otherwise, he’d know what you’re doing,” Sebastian said. “From what I’ve dug up, Zane doesn’t get into fights often, but when he does, he’s skilled.”

Chapter 302 Don’t Cry
Confusion flickered in Zane’s eyes. “Have we met before, Ms. Anderson?”
“I don’t know,” Riley said.
Because she honestly didn’t know if the man in front of her was Samuel or not.
The confusion in Zane’s eyes deepened. She hadn’t said yes or no. She’d said she didn’t know.
But given the current situation, it was better not to make this a bigger scene. A quick private conversation to smooth things over and make this whole mess go away? That was worth it.
“Alright,” Zane agreed.
“There’s a small balcony over there. Let’s talk there. It’s quieter,” Riley said.
Zane nodded, but Cynthia grabbed his hand. “Zane, you’re really gonna go off alone with her?”
“I’m just going to talk for a bit, then I’ll be right back. It’ll be fine,” Zane said gently.
Watching Zane treat Cynthia so tenderly made Riley‘ yes1 4:23

sting with tears again.
When she was younger and got into trouble, Samuel would always say the same thing in that same gentle voice. “Don’t worry, it’ll be fine. Even if the world is ending, I’ve got you covered.”
After calming Cynthia down, Zane turned to Riley. “Alright, let’s go, Ms. Anderson.”
Riley blinked hard to hold back the tears an toward the balcony.
Lowed Zane
Cynthia glared at Riley’s retreating back, then turned to Sebastian with a frown. “Isn’t she your girlfriend, Mr. Torres? And you’re just gonna let her throw herself at another man? I didn’t think you were that understanding.”
Sebastian gave Cynthia a cold look. “You should be grateful Riley stopped me earlier. The Lincoln family backing or not, would’ve made you pay for that slap.”
Cynthia fumed.
What’s so special about Riley anyway?
And that guy who calls Riley “Rye“? He seems familiar–like I’ve seen him somewhere before.

Riley and Zane reached the small balcony.
It was quiet and empty here. Moonlight spilled across the space, and the peaceful night was a sharp contrast to all the drinking and mingling going on inside the ballroom.
“Alright, Ms. Anderson.” Zane’s voice came from behind her. “What did you want to talk about? Just say it.”
Riley took a deep breath and turned to look at zane.
The ballroom lights had been one thing, but out here with moonlight falling across his face, he looked different, harder, colder. The way he looked at her–there was nothing there, just
distance.
Nothing like the warmth she remembered.
“Do you know me?” Riley asked, watching his face carefully for any reaction.
Zane’s expression didn’t change. “Why? Should I?”
Riley’s hands tightened at her sides. “You look like someone I know. That’s why I’m asking. I heard you came back to the Lincoln family three years ago, so… what were you doing before that?”

“That’s my business,” Zane said flatly. “I don’t see why I need to tell you, Ms. Anderson.”
“I noticed how protective you were of Ms. Lincoln just now. You two must be really close.” Riley kept pushing. “Do you have any other sisters?”
“No.” Zane didn’t even hesitate. “Cynthia’s my only sister.”
Something twisted painfully in Riley’s chest, and she felt heat building behind her eyes. Samuel had said th act words to her once, “Riley’s my only sister.”
She kept questioning herself if he was really not Samuel.
“Are you okay?” Zane seemed to notice something was off.
“I just… I was thinking about my own brother.” Riley’s voice caught. “He always protected me. If anyone hurt me, he’d make them pay for it. But when he needed protection… I couldn’t protect him…”
Staring at his face now, Riley couldn’t stop thinking about that video–seeing Samuel so helpless, dragged away and dumped on the street like he was nothing. That was when the tears came. She couldn’t hold them back anymore.
They fell fast and heavy, one after another.

Zane froze. He clearly hadn’t expected her to just start crying in front of him like this.
He pulled out a handkerchief and held it out to her. “Hey, cry.”
don’t
Riley stared at the handkerchief through blurry eyes but didn’t take it. She just kept looking at him, crying even harder now.
It reminded her of Samuel. How he used to comfort her when she cried, so gentle with her.
There was so much of Samuel in this man. How could he not be
Samuel?
Zane stared at Riley crying in front of him, and something strange stirred in his chest.
It felt wrong somehow, like she wasn’t supposed to be crying like this. She should be strong and decisive, soaring free instead of… whatever this was.
He sighed and pulled out his handkerchief, then reached over and wiped the tears from her face.
