Riley left Zane’s place and headed back to her hotel.

She started to pull her hand back, but another hand grabbed

hers first.

Then those gorgeous deep eyes of his slowly opened, and he just stared at her.

“Riley,” he murmured, her name barely a whisper.

“Oh. You’re awake.” Riley felt awkward and tried to pull her fingers away.

But instead of letting go, he took her hand and guided it along the same path she’d traced on his face, like he wanted her to touch him again.

“Then what are you doing outside my room in the middle of the night if you’re not even sleeping?” she demanded.

“I couldn’t sleep, so I wanted to be near you. I thought maybe that would help me fall asleep.”

“I went to see Zane,” Riley said. “Let go of my hand first, and we can talk inside.”

Riley pulled out her key card, opened the door, and walked in first. Sebastian followed her into the room.

“Can you dig up information on Zane from three years ago?” she asked straight out.

Sebastian said, “I’m working on it, but he’s an illegitimate son of the Lincoln family. Even in the last three years, he’s barely shown his face in public, and anything from three years ago looks like someone deliberately covered it up. It’s gonna take some time.”

Sebastian’s face darkened. “Why’d you go alone? What if something had happened to you?”

“Going alone actually made it easier to get in. More people would’ve just made us easier to spot, and look, I’m back safe and sound, aren’t I?”

“And what if you hadn’t come back safe?” he snapped.

“I sent a delayed message to Vince just in case. If I wasn’t back by 3 a.m., it would’ve automatically sent to his phone, and he would’ve figured something out.” She wasn’t the type to go in without a backup plan.

“Zane keeps saying he’s not my brother, but I still want to do a DNA test. When I brought it up though, he refused. Getting a sample from him is gonna be tricky.” She paused, thinking it through.

“If I knock him out and get a sample, can you handle the fallout? Or should I just get him drunk and take the sample then?”

Riley asked the questions while taking off her jacket. If they were back home, this would be so much easier. She could just report it to the military, and they’d handle getting the DNA test done.

But no, they were stuck overseas, and behind Zane stood the 4/5 Lincoln family with all their power and connections.
