The guy in the photos really did look like Zane, just younger.
Riley’s heart sank.
He didn’t lose his memory? Could two people really look that identical?
“Besides, you’re American and I’m Russian,” Zane said. “I don’t think I’m your brother, Ms. Anderson.”
“Then can you show me your shoulder?” Riley wasn’t giving up. “My brother got a scar on his shoulder saving my life once. I just want to make sure.”
“Scar?” Zane looked confused.
“Yeah, a scar.” Riley pulled out one of the photos. In it, Samuel had an obvious mark on his left shoulder.
“Then I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed, Ms.
Anderson. I don’t have any scar like that on my shoulder,” Zane said.
Riley’s heart dropped even more, but she had to see for herself. She wouldn’t be able to let this go otherwise.

disrespectful, Mr. Lincoln, I’ll compensate you however you
want.”
“Compensate me?” Zane raised an eyebrow. “What if I want you to apologize to Cynthia? After all, you really pissed off my sister today.”
Riley froze. If this really was Samuel, he’d never say something
like that to her.
But she still wouldn’t give up.
“Fine!” She took a deep breath. “As long as you let me see your shoulder, I’ll do what you’re asking. I’ll apologize to Ms. Lincoln.”

Zane narrowed his eyes. “Why go this far? I already u you. I haven’t lost my memory, and I don’t have the scar in your photo. Even knowing that, you still want to see my shoulder?”
“Yes.” She was completely certain. “I need to see it for myself. Apologizing? Compared to my brother, that’s nothing.”
Even if Zane demanded something more humiliating or harsh, she’d do it.
This was about Samuel. She needed to know for sure.
If she was going to give up on him, she had to give up 2/6

completely.
“Is your brother really that important to you?” Zane asked.
“Yes,” Riley answered without hesitation. “He’s the most important person in my world. I’d give my life for him.”
Zane went still. He hadn’t expected that answer. She was willing to die for her brother…
That heavy feeling in his chest got stronger, making it hard to breathe.
“Sounds like you two are really close. I’m actually kind of jealous of your brother, having a sister like you.” As Zane spoke, he started unbuttoning his robe.
One button, then another… until all the buttons were undone and the robe slipped off his body.
His shoulder was completely exposed in front of her.
For a moment, Riley couldn’t even breathe. Her eyes locked onto his left shoulder, and she froze.
Her eyes
eyes welled up with tears. She stared at his left shoulder in disbelief, her lips trembling. “How is this…”
What she saw was mottled, damaged skin. 3/6

Burn marks were everywhere. They weren’t just on his
shoulder either. His chest, stomach, and sides were all marked up the same way.
“How did you get burned this badly?” Riley’s voice shook as she asked. She couldn’t help herself. Her hand reached out to touch the damaged skin on his shoulder.
But before her fingers made contact, he’d already pulled his shirt back on.
“As you can see, Ms. Anderson, my shoulder has burn scars. Not the marks from your photo,” Zane said.
Riley pressed her lips together.
Burns… Could they be from that fire five years ag
No, wait. In the video Wren showed me, Samuel still had that scar on his shoulder. So…
“When did you get these burns?” Riley asked.
“Three years ago. There was a fire.” Zane buttoned up his shirt. “Alright, Ms. Anderson, I’ve answered all your questions. I’m clearly not who you’re looking for, so can I go now?”
Riley bit down hard on her lip. “Can we do a DNA test?”

Zane paused while fastening the last button. “I just explained everything. I even showed you my shoulder like you asked. And you still think I might be your brother?”
“Even if I have to give up, I want to be completely sure first.” Her voice came out quieter than she meant it to.
Because honestly, he felt so much like Samuel to her.
Except for one thing–Samuel would never look at her with that cold, indifferent expression.
Like right now. He lifted his eyes and stared at her with that icy, detached gaze. “But why should I? Just because you have some ridiculous hunch, I’m supposed to take a DNA test with you? Ms. Anderson, I’m not your brother. I’ve been about that.”

At that moment, Riley felt like her heart had been plunged into freezing water.
He… really isn’t Samuel?
He’d said it so clearly, so why couldn’t she accept it?
Maybe because accepting it meant she might never find Samuel at all.
