Chapter 316 She Took the Bullet

Riley had taken the bullet for him.

Zane’s eyes widened in shock.

Why? Why did she do that?

If she suspected he was her brother, then showing up here to help him was already more than enough.

So why go this far? Using her own body to block a bullet? Didn’t she realize that could get her killed?

Vince took down the remaining kidnappers and rushed to Riley’s side, catching her just before she fell. “I’m getting you to a hospital right now!”

He yanked off his tie and wrapped it around the gunshot wound in her shoulder, trying to stop the bleeding.

Riley’s face had gone pale and she was fighting to stay conscious. Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead.

“Why…” Zane’s voice came out barely above a whisper. “Why would you do that?”

Riley took a shaky breath and looked at Zane, who was qompletely unharmed. She forced herself to smile.

Each time she said his name, it felt like something was tearing his soul apart.

“I’m… I’m fine. Don’t worry,” Riley said weakly, her face getting paler by the second.

But even like this, she was still trying to act like everything was

okay.

“The bleeding won’t stop. I need to get you to a hospital now!” Vince said. Even with the makeshift bandage he’d made from his tie, blood kept pouring from the wound.

Vince scooped Riley up in his arms, and right then, police backup finally arrived on the scene.

Sebastian came with the police.

Riley felt herself getting colder and colder. Her eyelids were so heavy she couldn’t keep them open anymore.

She knew it was from losing too much blood.

The police rushed over to Zane and Cynthia.

“Mr. Lincoln, Ms. Lincoln, are you both alright?” one officer asked.

But Zane wasn’t listening. He was staring down at the ground a few feet away, where drops of blood had splattered on the pavement, Riley’s blood.

If she hadn’t taken that bullet, it would’ve hit him instead.

So why did it hurt so much when she called him Samuel and threw herself in front of that gun? Why did his chest ache like this?

The pain was so bad it spread from his head through his entire body.

“Ah!” Zane clutched his head and let out a groan.

“Mr. Lincoln, what’s wrong?” The officer beside him moved in quickly.

But Zane just kept holding his head, trying to ride out the waves of pain crashing through him.

The bullet hadn’t even touched him, so why did his heart feel like someone was squeezing it?

Riley shouldn’t have gotten shot. She shouldn’t have taken that bullet for him. He’d rather it had been him instead.
