Chapter 317 She’d Found Samuel

Vince had served in the military–getting hurt on missions was just part of the job back then. He’d seen teammates get injured right in front of him, some way worse than this, but he’d never felt afraid like this before.

But when that bullet hit Riley, for a split second, he was terrified she’d just collapse, and that would be it.

“Why the hell did she get shot? You were supposed to protect her!” Sebastian grabbed Vince by the collar and yanked him

forward.

“Yeah. I didn’t protect her well enough,” Vince said quietly, not even fighting back.

“Why?”

“I didn’t think she’d rush forward to take a bullet for Zane. No, I should’ve known! I should’ve seen it coming!” Vince’s voice was raw with guilt. “Zane is Samuel. He’s her big brother. Of course she’d throw herself in front of a gun for him!”

If he’d just been more alert, if he’d moved a little faster, then Riley wouldn’t have taken that bullet at all.

Sebastian let go of Vince’s collar and slumped back.

“Right now?” Zane froze. He thought about Riley being rushed to the hospital. He wanted to see her, to find out how badly she was hurt.

He wanted to know how the hell he was supposed to repay her for this.

He’d already told himself it didn’t matter if he was the Samuel she was looking for or not. He wasn’t planning to acknowledge any family connection.

Because right now, he had to stay with the Lincoln family. That was the only way he could save Lina.

So why did his chest feel so heavy with guilt and regret and some emotion he couldn’t even put into words?

“Yes, we need to go back to Russia right now. I’m done with this place.” Cynthia turned to Zane. “You’re coming with me, and we’re getting on the first flight out.”

She hadn’t forgotten. After Riley took the bullet, she’d said Zane was her brother. Said it like she was absolutely sure

about it.

And that freaked Cynthia out.

What if Zane really was Riley’s brother?

a groan slipped out before she could stop it.

Two male voices spoke at almost the same time. “You’re awake?”

Riley looked at Sebastian and Vince, who’d both rushed to her bedside. “Where’s Samuel? Is he okay?”

“He’s fine,” Vince said. “I got you out of there, and then the police showed up. They arrested all the kidnappers. I already gave my statement at the police station about us shooting the kidnappers. We’re in the clear.”

Riley let out a breath of relief.

Sebastian hit the call button. “Now that you’re awake, let’s get the doctor and nurses in here to check on you.”

The medical staff arrived quickly and started examining her. That was when Riley found out she’d been unconscious for an entire day.

After the doctor finished checking her over, he said she was doing okay. The surgery had gone well, but they wouldn’t know if there’d be any lasting damage to her shoulder until it healed.
