But even if Riley was meeting Sebastian, she wouldn’t just go radio silent like this. Even if her phone died, Riley would’ve borrowed someone else’s phone or found a public phone to let Lara know she’d be home late.

“We contacted Mr. Torres earlier,” one of the officers said. “He told us Ms. Anderson is safe and already asleep. He said she’ll call you in the morning when she wakes up.”

Lara stared at them.

Wait, Riley is sleeping over at Sebastian’s place?

That didn’t make any sense. Riley hadn’t shown any signs of wanting to get back together with him. And when Riley was in the hospital, Sebastian hadn’t visited her even once.

“Give me Sebastian’s phone number. I need to call him,” Lara demanded.

The officer looked apologetic. “I’m sorry, but we can’t give out people’s private numbers. It’s against policy.‘

Lara spun around to face Shawn. “You know Sebastian. You have his contact info, right?”

“I/do,” Shawn admitted.

Shawn tilted his head slightly. “But why would I do that? What exactly is our relationship?”

Lara glared at him. “I’m your girlfriend. Now are you giving me the number or not?”

Even if she was only a temporary girlfriend for a year, she was still his girlfriend.

“Sure,” Shawn smiled and pulled out his phone. He scrolled through his contacts, found Sebastian’s number, and handed the phone over to Lara.

Lara felt like she’d just walked into some kind of trap. Like Shawn had somehow played her, but she couldn’t figure out

how.

She grabbed his phone and dialed.

A moment later, Sebastian’s voice came through. “Shawn?”

“It’s Lara,” she said sharply. “Sebastian, what did you do to Riley?”

“Nothing. She was just tired, so she went to sleep. If you need something, I’ll have her call you tomorrow,” Sebastian replied.

Lara said, “Forget tomorrow. Where is Riley right now? I’m coming to get her.”

“I don’t think I’m obligated to tell you that.” Sebastian refused.

Lara’s blood boiled. “Sebastian, you—”

“It’s late. Whatever this is, we’ll talk tomorrow.” Sebastian hung up before she could respond.

Lara stared at her phone, so pissed she almost chucked it across the room.

“Can’t you just arrest him?” She whipped around to face the officer nearby. “Sebastian kidnapped her!”

Something had to be wrong. Riley’s phone was off, and no one could reach her.

The cop gave an awkward laugh. “Look, the surveillance shows Riley got in the car willingly, and she’s an adult, so… maybe just wait until tomorrow? See if she contacts you then.”

Which meant they couldn’t do anything about it right now.

Vince obviously got that too.

Lara frowned and turned to Shawn. “Did you and Vince track down where Sebastian took Riley?”

“Dead end,” Shawn said. “We tracked Riley getting in Sebastian’s car, and then it stopped at his apartment here in Washington. After that, nothing. Someone wiped the surveillance footage, and neither Sebastian nor Riley is at that apartment.”

“What the hell does Sebastian want with her?” Lara’s worry was written all over her face.

“We’ll find out tomorrow. He said he’d have Riley contact you, didn’t he?” Shawn said.

Lara’s frown didn’t budge.

“It’s late,” Shawn said. “Let me drive you home.”

Lara nodded, and they headed out of the station. Shawn held out his hand. “Give me the car keys.”

“What about you? Did you drive here?” Lara asked.
