Chapter 326 That Wouldn’t Be Appropriate
Sebastian even wanted to drag everyone down with her if she died.
But she was alive. Thank God, she was alive.
“Sebastian, thank you,” Riley said suddenly. “Thank you for everything you did for me in Germany. But we broke up. You don’t owe me anything. You don’t have to help me or protect me. So you don’t need to apologize for me getting hurt.”
Something flickered in his eyes, and he finally let go.
Riley breathed a sigh of relief and started to get up, but Sebastian stopped her. “Don’t move. I’m not done with the bandage yet. Let me finish.”
This time, he actually focused on applying the medicine properly.
When he was done, and the gauze was secured, he carefully helped her put her shirt back on and buttoned it up for her.
Riley looked at Sebastian’s hand. The splint was gone now. “Your fingers… how are they?”
She’d broken three of his fingers the day they broke up. Snapped them herself.

“They’re pretty much healed,” Sebastian said. “Give it a few more days, and they’ll be completely fine. The doctor said there won’t be any permanent damage.
“Good,” she said.
Something lit up in his eyes.
So she still cares about me after all.
“What do you want for dinner?” he asked.
“Whatever’s fine,” Riley said.
Sebastian cooked all their meals here on the island himself, and the ingredients came in by helicopter.
Watching him put on an apron and move around the kitchen brought Riley back to when they’d lived together in that apartment.
He used to cook for her back then too. His skills weren’t anything special, but somehow, the food always tasted good to her, warm and comforting.
Back then, Samuel had disappeared and her parents had died overseas. She’d lost everything in one night.
Later, even after she married Bryce, it never really felt like

home.
Those three years with Bryce, shed just felt out of place the whole time. But during those few months with Sebastian? That was when she’d felt like she had a home again.
If Sebastian hadn’t hidden the truth about Samuel from her, if he’d just been honest from the start, maybe they could’ve kept that trust between them. Maybe everything would be different
now.
But there were no what–ifs in real life.
Sebastian must’ve felt her watching him, because he turned from the open kitchen and looked at where she sat on the couch.
“It’s nothing,” she said, dropping her gaze to hide the sudden tears in her eyes.
She was holding one of the latest research journals. The study here had tons of books, and Riley had noticed they were all things she’d be interested in. Sebastian hadn’t just randomly filled those shelves.
“Food will be ready soon,” Sebastian said.
A few minutes later, he brought out dinner–five dishes and a soup. Way too much for just two people, but they were all things she liked.

“Try it,” he said.

Riley picked up her fork and took a few bites. Surprise flickered across her face. “Your cooking’s gotten a lot better than it used to be.”
At least these dishes tasted as good as what she’d get at a proper
restaurant.
“I took some classes,” Sebastian said. “It would’ve been weird if I didn’t get better.”
Riley almost choked on her food.
She stared at him in shock. It was hard to imagine someone like Sebastian–who could have any chef in the world cook for him— actually taking cooking lessons.
“What, that surprising?” he asked.
“A little. Why’d you decide to learn?” she asked casually.
“Because you told me once that your dad used to cook for you guys when he had time. You said you wanted to find a husband who’d treat you the way your father treated your mother,” Sebastian said.
The fork in Riley’s hand suddenly felt heavy.
He still remembered all those things she’d said back then.

She took a deep breath and looked at him. “My dad never lied to my mom or kept secrets from her. They trusted each other completely and would’ve died for each other. Right up until the end, they were protecting each other.”
Sebastian’s grip tightened on his utensils. “Riley, I’d give you my life too. Would that make you trust me again?”
“Sebastian, what would I do with your life?” Riley said, then went back to eating.
Sebastian pressed his lips together. So was she saying she didn’t want his life and wouldn’t trust him again either?

That night, Sebastian was still in the room with her, and Riley didn’t know what to do about it.
“Aren’t you going to your own room?” she asked.
“This is the only bedroom in the villa,” he said.
Riley stared at him in disbelief.
One bedroom? Seriously?
“Okay, fine. I’ll sleep on the couch.” She grabbed a blanket and started toward the sofa, but Sebastian caught her wrist.

“Can’t we just share the bed?” he asked.
Riley frowned. “That wouldn’t be appropriate.”
