“We shared a bed in Germany,” Sebastian insisted.

“That was different. I was repaying you for your help, and I told you it was only while we were in Germany.” Riley pulled her hand away. “Now you’ve trapped me on this island. I don’t owe you anything.”

“Fair enough.” Sebastian’s smile was bitter. “I’ll take the couch then.”

He grabbed a pillow and blanket and tossed them on the couch. Then he pulled out a pill bottle and shook a handful of pills into his palm.

Riley’s eyes went wide. Before Sebastian could swallow them, she grabbed his wrist. “Wait, what are those?”

“Just sleeping pills.”

She snatched the bottle from him. It wasn’t the same one she’d seen him use in Germany, and when she checked the label, her stomach dropped. The max dose was five pills. He had way more than that in his hand.

“Are you insane? You can’t take that many!” She glared at him.

“I’m not trying to die,” Sebastian said quietly. “I still need to get you off this island once you’re healed. I’m not throwing my life

“Then why are you taking that many? The label literally says five max!”

“Because five doesn’t work for me anymore. Kind of defeats the purpose if they don’t help me sleep.”

Riley frowned. “Your insomnia’s still that bad? Have you seen a doctor since you got back?”

“Yeah, I saw one. They switched my meds, but nothing’s really helped.” He looked up at her. “Why? You worried about me?”

Riley bit her lip and didn’t answer.

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve built up a tolerance, so I need more for them to work. I’ll be fine.” He tilted his head back, about to swallow the pills.

Riley grabbed his wrist again. “If I held your hand while you’re sleeping, could you fall asleep without the pills?”

“Is that pity?” He looked at her carefully. “If I say yes, are you going to sleep next to me tonight and hold my hand?”

Riley hesitated.

Before she could answer, Sebastian spoke again, “Could you keep doing it? Pitying me?”

He said, “If you can’t keep pitying me, then I’ll just go back to taking these pills once you leave the island anyway. A few days more or a few days less–what difference does it make?”

He pulled his hand free and tossed the pills into his mouth, swallowing them with water.

Riley turned away. Sebastian was keeping his distance. She should feel relieved about that. But watching him swallow all those pills just made her chest feel heavy.

“Ms. Hayes, you seem a bit down,‘ someone called out from across the private lounge.

“Wait, Lara, didn’t you just land that new contract? That project’s a goldmine, and it wasn’t easy to get. You should be celebrating!” another woman added.

Lara looked around the room at the group of wealthy Washington socialites.

They all had some kind of business connection with her, and breaking into this circle hadn’t been easy. She’d used plenty of tactics to make it happen.

She didn’t particularly enjoy spending time with these women, but business was business. If she wanted to succeed, she had to treat these connections like clients and maintain the relationships properly.

“Yeah, I just closed the deal. Hopefully you ladies will keep sending business my way,” Lara said with a smile. “Drinks are on me tonight.”

“See? I knew Lara was generous. Oh, and speaking of which, I heard this club just brought in some new guys. We should take a look and see if anyone’s worth checking out,” one of the women suggested.

The “new guys” they were talking about were obviously the male escorts working at the club.

Normally Lara would’ve been interested in some eye candy, but with everything happening with Riley, she wasn’t in the mood at all. Sebastian had taken Riley away to that island, and there was no telling what she was going through right now.

A few moments later, a line of good–looking young men walked into the room one by one. Lara’s eyes landed on one particular man, and she let out a soft sound of surprise.

“Oh? Did someone catch your eye, Ms. Hayes?” One of the women followed Lara’s gaze toward the young man. “Come over and sit next to Ms. Hayes. What’s your name?”

The man looked a bit uncomfortable, but he walked over and

sat down beside Lara anyway. “I’m Carl. Nice to meet you, Ms. Hayes. Nice to meet you all, ladies.”

Lara stared at the man in front of her. The man who’d helped her all those years ago had also been named Carl.

So is this him? Is he the one who saved me back then?
