Chapter 342 A Soldier?
Lucky Draw
“Not only was I looking for you, but the nation was too. You were a soldier. During a mission, you ran into a border fire, and that’s how you ended up stranded in Germany.” Riley’s eyes blurred, her voice thick with emotion.
“A soldier?” Zane froze.
“Yes. You were a soldier. All these years, we have never stop searching for you.” Even when her parents were abroad, du their last call with her, they had still been thinking about Samuel. They had planned they’d look for him the moment their assignment ended and they returned home.
“Samuel, our parents… they always hoped to find you. If they—”
“I don’t intend to be Samuel Anderson again,” he cut her off. “As for you saving me in Germany, I’m grateful. If there’s something you want as repayment, and it is within my ability, I can give it to you.”
Riley stood stunned. She had never expected this response. After telling him everything, after proving their bond, Samuel still refused to return to his identity.
“Why?” she asked, unable to understand. “You are my brother. You have no blood relation to the Lincoln family. Why would you carry the name of their illegitimate son?”

Zane let out a quiet, bitter laugh. Because from the very beginning, I knew I had no blood ties to the Lincoln family. But they kept me alive. And because of that, I have no choice but to stay as Zane Lincoln.”
His gaze fell on the mist gathering in her eyes.
Even though he was the one rejecting her request, the emotion on her face created a dull ache inside him.
It was as if something inside tried to tell him that he was th cause of her sadness.
But she should not look like this. She should have been bright, unrestrained, and full of light.
He lifted a hand toward her face without thinking, but when she looked at him, he stopped himself abruptly.
“In any case, if you decide how you want me to repay you, you may contact me,” Zane said. He removed a business card and placed it in her hand. Then he turned and left the private room.
Riley stared at the card.
The name Zane Lincoln printed on it felt like a needle pressing into her heart.
He should have been Samuel. He should have been her brother.

“Rye.” Vince’s voice came unexpectedly from the doorway.
Riley turned, seeing him step into the room. “Why are you…”
“I never went back inside. I was outside the whole time, and when I saw Samuel walk out, I figured I should check on you.” Vince looked at the tears gathering in her eyes. “What happened? The conversation didn’t go well?”
Riley managed a strained smile and fought to keep her tears from falling. “Samuel doesn’t want to reclaim his identity. only wants to be Zane.”
“Why?” Vince frowned.
“Maybe… out of gratitude?” Riley said, unsure. “He told me that the Lincoln family kept him alive, and that he knows they’re not related to him by blood.”
“Maybe Samuel has his own reasons. We can figure it out once we learn the whole story,” Vince said gently.
Riley nodded. She needed to uncover what truly happened between Samuel and the Lincoln family. “Come on. Let’s go back. Lara must be waiting for us.
As she turned, her loose hair accidentally caught on the button of Vince’s suit jacket.
“Hold on,” Vince said, pulling her back lightly. “Your hair is

Riley stood stiffly, mortified.

As he worked to free the strand, he asked, “Why did you wear your hair down? You had it tied earlier.”
“The hair tie broke,” she said quickly.
“Is that so?” Vince’s eyes darkened slightly. He gently lifted a lock of her hair between his fingers, his gaze drifting to the red mark along her neck.
“Rye, tell me… did you really break up with Sebastian?” he asked abruptly.
Riley paused and then said, “Yes. We broke up.”
“Good,” he said.
Riley looked back at him sharply, but the sudden movement tugged painfully at her hair, which was still half–caught.
“Careful. It’s not fully free yet,” he murmured.
“Vince.” Riley steadied herself and spoke clearly. “Don’t waste your time on me. I see you as a friend, a comrade, a younger brother. I can’t see you as anything else.”
“I know. You’ve said that before,” Vince replied. “And I also told

Riley stopped breathing for a moment.

The hair slipped from his fingers.
Vince lifted his head, his gaze steady on her. “Sebastian failed your trust. But I won’t.”
