Tyler strolled in with a snide smirk, his eyes locking onto Quinn like he was sizing her up.
“Quinn, let me introduce you. This is my eldest grandson, Tyler,” Iris said, her tone sharp as she turned to him. “Tyler, this is Peyton’s fiancée. It’s rare for the house to be this lively today, and we’ve got plenty of guests coming. You watch your step and stay out of trouble. Don’t you dare cause any mess for me!”
Iris’ attitude toward the two couldn’t have been more different, her warning to Tyler clear as day.
As soon as she finished speaking, Donna’s face twisted with indignation. “Iris, Tyler’s been swamped with work lately. He hasn’t been home in ages. What trouble could he possibly stir up?”
“If anyone’s looking for trouble around here, it’s those shady characters who don’t belong!” she added, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
The moment Tyler’s family stepped through the door, the warm atmosphere in the house turned icy, a far cry from the cozy vibe just minutes earlier.
“I’m just giving your family a heads-up-quit with the backtalk!” Iris shot back, clearly annoyed. After the chaos they’d caused the past two times, she’d grown tired of their nonsense.
Lately, Peyton had tightened his grip on the company’s finances, cutting off Tyler’s every source of funding. He couldn’t lay a finger on a single cent from the company now.
Every project the company ran was Peyton’s own doing-Tyler had nothing to do with any of it. So even if he wanted to slink back into the company, there was no place for him, and certainly no profitable projects for him to leech off.
The tension between the two sides crackled like electricity, neither willing to back down an inch.
Tyler had never had any real skills to speak of. He’d always mooched off the company’s money to get by. But now that his cash cow was gone, he was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
“Mom, I heard all about what went down at home,” Harold finally spoke up, his voice cold. “You’re being way too biased-playing favorites way too obvious. Do you have any idea what kind of life Tyler’s living right now? He’s your eldest grandson! Why should you hand over every single project to some outsider to run?”
It was clear as day-their whole family had shown up uninvited, ready to pick a fight. Not one of them had a friendly look on their face.
“Today is Grandma’s birthday,” Peyton cut in, his expression darkening to a near scowl. “Did you come here to wish her a happy birthday, or to start a fight? Can’t we save this nonsense for another time?”
He thought he’d been tough enough on them before. But it seemed he hadn’t taught them a lesson hard enough to make them realize their mistakes.
If that was the case, then he wasn’t going to hold back anymore.
“Peyton, I’m talking to your grandmother. This doesn’t concern you,” Harold snapped, his tone dripping with disdain. “Do you really think you’re some big shot now? Everything you have today is something we let you have! Are you really going to push your luck this far?”

Harold was fuming as he dressed Peyton down. As Iris’ oldest son, he firmly believed that besides Iris, he was the one who called the shots in this household-everyone should bow to his will.
But ever since he and Peyton’s father were young, Iris had never thought highly of them. She’d always said they lacked the smarts to run the company. On top of that, the two brothers had never gotten along, which had stressed her out to no end over the years.
But then Peyton grew up, and Iris saw his potential right away. She knew she could trust him to take care of the family’s business without a hitch.
“Uncle Harold, everything I have today is something I earned with my own two hands-not handouts from you people,” Peyton said flatly, his face completely devoid of emotion.
“If you truly think you’re capable of running the company, I’d be happy to hand it over to you. The only problem is—I doubt you’d even be able to hold onto it for a single day!”
Harold was left sputtering, completely lost for words. Because he knew Peyton was telling the truth. Once, he’d taken over as the company’s chairman. But after he’d messed up a single project, the entire board of directors had revolted against him.
Back then, the board had threatened Iris-if she let him stay on as chairman, they’d all pull their shares and abandon the company. The whole mess had given Iris a massive headache, leaving her completely at a loss for what to do.
In the end, she’d had no choice but to step in and take charge of the company herself, just to get things back on track.
“That’s enough! If you came here today just to bicker and fight, then this house doesn’t welcome you!” Iris shouted, her patience finally snapping. “And don’t bother coming back to celebrate my birthday ever again!
“You’re all family-blood relatives! Why do you always have to pick a fight every time you’re in the same room? Is it too much to ask for just one day of peace and quiet?”
Iris had long since given up on them, and she wasn’t holding back her true feelings anymore.
But at the end of the day, they were her own flesh and blood. No matter how angry she got, she could never bring herself to be truly cruel to them.
Take Tyler, for example. Even though she was thoroughly disappointed in him, she’d never cut off his allowance completely. She’d always let him dip into the company’s funds whenever he pleased.
