"You kept her photo as your lock screen? You must really love her," Juniper observed, her curiosity peaking as she pressed on. "If you love her so much, why did you two get divorced?"

Harold pressed his lips together tightly, staying silent.

"Oh, I get it." Juniper thought for a moment before blurting out, "Unrequited love? She didn't feel the same way about you?"

Harold frowned deeply. She was pouring salt straight onto an open wound. He was annoyed. He really wanted to stitch the kid's mouth shut.

But he quickly dropped the idea. Mostly because he knew he'd lose if they actually fought.

"Juniper, drink some juice," Shanley interjected, swiftly handing her a glass to cut off the interrogation.

Harold shot Shanley a look packed with sheer gratitude.

"This is good." Juniper took a long sip, then looked right back up at Harold. "Seriously though, why did you guys break up?"

Harold massaged his temples. She was an endless fountain of questions, and she clearly wasn't going to stop until she got an answer.

"Personality differences," Harold finally forced out, his voice hoarse. "She's an incredible person. The divorce was my fault."

"I heard she didn't want the divorce," Juniper noted, resting her chin on her hand, highly intrigued.

"She did." At the mention of it, a bitter, self-deprecating smile touched Harold's lips. "This time when I went back, she went to her hometown. There was a landslide on the way, so she couldn't make it back in time. And since I got a lead on Mom and Dad, I decided to return early."

"Oh." Juniper blinked, her intuition screaming that something was off. She had spoken to his wife on the phone. When she'd said his name, her voice had been so soft it could melt a person's heart. It didn't sound like a woman who felt absolutely nothing for him.

"Do you think I'll get to meet her eventually?" Juniper pressed. "You should invite her to Eclara City for a visit."

She wanted to see exactly what was going on with her own eyes.
