While the doctor was still debating their next course of action, the heart monitor on the bedside table suddenly lost its rhythm, letting out a sharp, erratic alarm.
"Code blue! Get the—" The doctor's face drained of color as he turned to shout for backup.
Suddenly, he was shoved hard from behind. Stumbling a few steps, he whipped his head around, only to see Juniper wielding a syringe.
"What are you doing?!" the doctor gasped, his eyes wide with panic.
She might be the future Mrs. Schwartz, but she had no medical training! How could she just mess around during a cardiac event? If she actually killed the man, the Schwartz family would undoubtedly pin the blame on him.
Juniper completely ignored his shouting. She located the cardiac stimulant and, with fingers that barely trembled, drew the medication into the syringe. Then, she expertly found Shanley's vein and prepared to inject it.
"Ms. Payne, you can't just play doctor here!" The doctor lunged forward to stop her, but he froze when he met her gaze. Her eyes were bloodshot, feral, and utterly terrifying.
"If he dies, it's on me," she spat, her tone freezing him in his tracks. She looked away, smoothly plunging the needle into Shanley's vein and administering the stimulant.
The doctor stood rooted to the spot, entirely dumbfounded by her flawless execution.
"What are you staring at? Get over here and help me!" she barked.
Jolted back to reality, the doctor rushed to her side, strictly following her rapid-fire commands. As they worked in tandem, a shocking realization washed over him. He stared at the girl, who was currently mixing medications with the precision of a seasoned veteran.
"Yes." Juniper finally looked up, meeting his eyes with dead seriousness. "I'm taking full responsibility for him. If anything changes, I will page you immediately. Trust me, I want him alive more than you do."
The doctor gave her a long, hard look, deciding not to push his luck. He quietly slipped out of the room. Thankfully, his office was right next door; if anything went south, he'd be there in seconds.
With the door shut, the only sound left in the room was the rhythmic beeping of the life-support machines. Juniper sat down next to the bed and gently took Shanley's freezing hand in hers.
The sleeve of his hospital gown slipped back, revealing the red sandalwood bracelet wrapped around his wrist. It was the birthday gift she had given him. She hadn't expected him to never take it off.
Juniper absentmindedly rubbed the smooth wooden beads, her mind drifting back to when their true identities were still hidden and they had unexpectedly clashed. He had nearly lost his life over this exact bracelet back then, too.
