Meanwhile, across the city.
Jimmie settled into the hotel Luella had arranged for him.
The person who greeted him was a refined, well-dressed young man with a polite demeanor and a smile that felt like a spring breeze.
"Mr. Tate, I presume?" the young man asked respectfully. "Hello, I am the manager of this hotel. Mr. Langley sent me to take care of your stay."
"Thank you."
Jimmie nodded, following the man inside.
"No need to be so polite," the manager smiled softly. "You are a friend of Mr. Langley, which naturally makes you a friend of mine."
"You two are close?"
Jimmie glanced over, observing the man's face. He noticed that whenever Luella was mentioned, a genuine, fond smile reached the corners of the manager's eyes.
As an actor, Jimmie knew exactly what that kind of smile meant.
Admiration. Affection.
"Very close."
The man didn't hide it, though his answer remained slightly ambiguous. "To me, Mr. Langley is a confidant, a friend, and above all, family."
Jimmie quietly assessed the man, taking in his features and his build.
Didn't Luella have a weird obsession with collecting photos of guys with eight-pack abs? This guy definitely didn't look like he was hiding a shredded physique under that suit!
"Mr. Tate, is there an issue?" Seeing Jimmie remain silent, the manager asked in confusion.
"No."
Jimmie offered a polite, totally fake smile as he stepped into his room. "I don't need anything at the moment. Thank you for your hospitality."
"Understood."
The manager stepped back into the hallway, smiling warmly. "Have a good night's rest."
Jimmie returned the smile and closed the door.
Once he was alone, he prepared to wash up but realized he had left his small duffel bag in the car.
He headed back out to grab it, but just as he turned the corner, he overheard the manager on the phone.
"I'm handling it. Doesn't Mr. Langley trust me?"
*Luella?*
"Everything is sorted out," the manager said, leaning against a desk, a deep smile playing on his lips. "I heard you're back in town. When are we meeting up?"
Jimmie couldn't hear Luella's response, but the manager's smile widened. "I miss you too."
Jimmie stood in the shadows for a few seconds before retracting his gaze and walking away in the opposite direction.
"Mr. Tate."
