The brilliant diamond sparkled, pulling him back to the memory of their wedding day when they exchanged rings.
Marrying him had felt like a punishment to her. She had cried from the start of the ceremony to the very end, completely ruining her makeup. Afterward, she drank herself into a stupor to numb the pain and nearly lost the ring. He had spent three hours crawling through the grass to find it.
If she truly didn't care and was so dead-set on a divorce... Why was she still wearing it?
Harold's grip tightened, his eyes darkening.
Just then, a familiar voice called out from behind. "Harold?"
"Juniper?"
Harold walked over, his brows knitting together. "What are you doing here? Are you not feeling well?"
"I should be asking you that." Juniper Payne's sharp eyes zeroed in on the unmistakably female coat in his arms. She narrowed her eyes. "Don't tell me you're actually cheating."
"What?" Harold frowned.
"Waiting for her texts yesterday, and now bringing her to the hospital today..." Juniper's gaze turned icy, emphasizing every word. "Is this how you treat Lorelei?"
They might be siblings, but she always sided with justice over blood.
Cheating on and betraying a woman was a hard line she wouldn't let him cross.
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Harold couldn't help but smile, finding the situation amusing. "It's not another woman. It's Lorelei. She came to town a couple of days ago and twisted her ankle, so I brought her in."
"Lorelei?!" Juniper's eyes lit up, her inner gossip flaring to life. She was dying to meet her legendary sister-in-law. She sidestepped him and marched toward the door, muttering, "I'm gonna go say hi."
"Juniper." Harold quickly blocked her path, a troubled look crossing his handsome face. He sighed, "Things are a little complicated between us right now. It might be overwhelming for her to meet the family today. Give it some time, and I'll officially introduce you over dinner."
"Complicated?" Juniper paused, thinking for a moment before casually driving a knife right into her brother's heart. "Oh, right! She's getting ready to dump you."
Harold stood frozen. If the girl standing in front of him wasn't his sister, he would have walked away on the spot.
"Uh." Realizing she had touched a nerve, Juniper blinked innocently. "Sorry. I didn't mean to hit a sore spot. But seriously, why is she dumping you?"
After all.
She had her brother completely wrapped around her finger.
Saskia: "Fair point."
A short distance away.
Lorelei sat in a borrowed wheelchair, witnessing the entire exchange.
She saw Harold gently pat the girl's head, his gaze incredibly soft.
And the girl's voice, though she couldn't make out the words, sounded undeniably familiar.
It was the same voice that had answered his phone the other day.
His old flame?
