Don't Mess with the Girl with Candy novel Chapter 1459

Lorelei's smile faded as she quickly intervened. "Isn't it time for your afternoon nap? No sneaking around playing video games behind my back."

Harold had never brought up meeting his family.

She figured he wanted to avoid complicating things since they were on the verge of splitting up.

If he didn't bring it up, it wasn't her place to ask.

"I would never!"

Eleanor defensively hid her gaming console behind her back, though her voice betrayed her guilt. "Alright, alright, maybe just a little bit."

"Take care of your health, Grandma."

Successfully shifting the focus, Lorelei offered a soft smile. "Get some rest. Harold and I will come visit you in a few days."

"Really?"

"Really." Harold nodded, sliding his hand naturally to rest on Lorelei's waist, presenting a picture of perfect intimacy. "We'll come see you together."

"Wonderful, wonderful."

Seeing them so close put the old woman's mind at ease. Before hanging up, she couldn't resist dropping a hint. "Once work settles down, it might be time to start thinking about other important milestones. I don't know how much longer I'll be around to wait."

*Other important milestones.*

They both knew exactly what she meant.

A baby.

For the past year, Eleanor had been dropping heavy hints.

Lorelei understood why. Her grandmother wanted the comfort of knowing she wouldn't be completely alone after she passed.

A child would give her an anchor.

If she could, Lorelei would happily have a baby just to give the old woman some peace of mind.

"We'll do our best, Grandma."

As Lorelei frantically searched for a way to change the subject, Harold suddenly spoke up.

"Do you prefer a great-grandson or a great-granddaughter, Grandma?"

Lorelei: "???"

Was he out of his mind?!

"Let her," Harold said nonchalantly, pouring a glass of warm water and setting it next to her. "Didn't you see how happy she looked at the thought of great-grandchildren?"

Lorelei was momentarily speechless. So it was a white lie meant to bring her comfort.

Making her grandmother happy was always a good thing.

"Is your family... nice to you?" she found herself asking softly.

"Do you want to meet them? I can take you." He met her gaze squarely. "There's a lot of them. They can be a bit loud."

"Are you sure?" she asked, surprised. "We're getting a divorce soon."

"We haven't yet, have we?"

He leaned in slightly, his dark eyes intense, his tone carrying an unmistakable edge of command. "Lorelei, stop bringing up divorce every single day."

She opened her mouth, then closed it. It wasn't like she wanted to.

"Also, when we're in front of people, I need you to act more affectionate toward me so we don't draw suspicion," he added, throwing a subtle, guilty glance at the bewildered girl.

"O-okay."

The little lamb nodded, walking right into the big bad wolf's trap.
