Emmy suddenly remembered something and looked at him. “Are your injuries okay now?”
James thought maybe she was finally letting her guard down. He nodded quickly, all eager confidence. “Completely healed! I’m good to go, promise.”
He shot her a mischievous grin. “If you don’t believe me, I can take my shirt off for a quick inspection. Or… you could check for yourself?”
Emmy rolled her eyes and pushed his hand away. “If you’re all healed up, then a few more days of waiting won’t kill you.”
James fell quiet, staring at her, obviously frustrated but not daring to push his luck. Emmy’s tone was firm and left no room for negotiation. He had to settle for just resting his hand politely on her waist.
His body was still tense, a barely controlled storm of energy and longing. The chemistry between them lingered, so obvious it was impossible to ignore, but he didn’t try anything else.
And even with their bodies side by side, neither of them could fall asleep. James was kept awake by the heat pulsing through his veins, restless and burning. Emmy lay beside him, thoughts tangled and emotions swirling, replaying everything that had happened and everything she didn’t dare say.
In the darkness, they both stared at the ceiling, lost in their own worlds, and didn’t finally drift off until dawn was just peeking through the curtains.
They were up early the next morning. The plan was to fly to Fiji first thing.
But James suddenly switched things up.
“I changed our flight to tonight,” he announced.
He was standing by the window, gazing out at Harvard’s snowy campus, then turned to look at her. “I want to walk around here for a while. See the places you go every day, the place you’ve called home these last six months.”
Emmy blinked in surprise, then nodded.
They got ready in a hurry, called John and Harlene from next door, and headed out for breakfast together.
Afterward, Emmy took James on a slow stroll around the old campus.
Harvard after a snowfall looked almost magical, quiet and full of history. Because it was winter break, there were only a few people wandering around.
Emmy was bundled up in her white down jacket and a red wool scarf, walking ahead. James, in his black cashmere coat, was perfectly composed but attentive, taking slow steps at her side.
He finally looked at her, and for just a second, she saw a mix of feelings in his eyes that made her heart ache. Longing, regret, a bit of jealousy.
“Emmy,” he said, his voice barely audible over the wind, almost lost in it. “I never went to school. I’ve never set foot inside a school building before.”
“This is the first time I’ve ever… actually stepped onto a university campus.”
He’d never done any of the usual things. Had never carried a backpack, never sat in a sunlit classroom listening to lectures, never been just another student among many.
So he looked around, quietly admiring the students and professors who had a chance to learn in a place like this, and ached with envy.
Emmy was stunned.
She had always thought of James as unstoppable—a genius, well-educated, speaking several languages, brilliant in finance, full of surprising bits of knowledge about the world. In her mind, he had to be the product of some elite education, someone who’d always been surrounded by opportunity.
Almost without thinking, she asked, “Then… how did you learn all the things you know?”
