Sylvia rolled her eyes and turned to walk away. Behind her, Steve called out, his tone slow and casual. “You really want to leave now? Every spot is packed right now. Just getting on a ride will take at least two hours. I’ve got a VIP pass. No waiting.”
Sylvia paused for a second. Steve saw her hesitation and gave the throttle a quick twist, making the engine growl like a wild animal. “Come on, take a spin around the island with me. It’ll be a rush. The views are incredible, and you’ll get a close look at that GlowOcean cruise ship.”
Sylvia hesitated, feeling that pull of curiosity. She wanted to have fun, but going with Steve… she was on the fence. Steve picked up on her doubts and got impatient. “Hurry up, don’t waste time. Just one lap, maybe an hour or two. If you’re not coming, I’ll go by myself.”
Sylvia shot him a wary glare. “You better not try anything.”
Steve’s smile was ridiculously innocent. “Do I look like someone who would?”
Sylvia narrowed her eyes, but his invitation seemed genuine. Reluctantly, she waded through the shallow water and climbed carefully onto the seat behind him. She was still figuring out where to put her hands when, all of a sudden, the jet ski took off. It sped forward so fast, Sylvia was nearly whipped right into the ocean.
She shrieked, arms snapping tight around Steve’s waist. “Steve! Slow down! Seriously, slow down!”
Sylvia could feel herself turning pale. Her voice was barely even audible through the wind. Gusts whipped at her face and within seconds, her sunhat was snatched up and vanished over the endless sea.
Steve ignored her completely. If anything, he squeezed the throttle harder. The jet ski bounced mercilessly over the waves. Every jolt made Sylvia feel like her insides were rattling. The speed just kept building, turning the world into a blur. At first, there were other tourists nearby, but as they flew along, the world grew quiet except for the roar of the waves and the deafening engine.
Sylvia’s eyes clamped shut, her grip around Steve’s waist so tight, her knuckles ached.
She had no idea how much time passed—it could have been ten minutes, or it could’ve been half an hour. Suddenly, the jet ski spun to a dramatic stop. Sylvia’s stomach lurched, and she barely managed to scramble off before collapsing on the sand.
Her legs buckled as soon as she stood, and she dropped to her knees, dry heaving. Tears stung her eyes.
Steve sat on the seat, looking down, totally indifferent. If anything, he just looked irritated and a little amused. “Really? That’s all you got? You’re the one who wanted to try all the extreme water sports.”
Nothing answered her but the waves and the fading roar of the engine.
Steve had just wanted to scare her, to shatter that tough mask she wore. One last show of power, and then he disappeared, gone in a flash.
Sylvia trembled with rage, her eyes filling with tears. She wiped her face, furious. “Bastard.”
Fumbling, she pulled her phone out of the waterproof pouch hanging around her neck. She tapped the screen, desperate for a signal, but there was nothing. Not even a single bar. The place was so remote, it didn’t even have cell service.
She glanced warily at the shadowy trees behind her. If she remembered right, this was exactly the spot the island visitor’s guide had marked as off limits—a protected zone meant to keep people out for the sake of the animals. No cell towers, no rescue.
Just as she stood there, lost and unsure where to go, the sound of voices drifted by, carried on the breeze from somewhere nearby.
