Teresa sucked in a sharp breath, her fingers tightening around Emmy’s hand. Disbelief washed over her face as she listened. When James finished speaking, Teresa looked at her daughter. The fear in her eyes started to fade, making room for pure relief and pride.
Just yesterday, she’d watched Emmy on the deck, moving with easy charm among politicians and business tycoons—people who usually seemed so distant and untouchable. The way Emmy held herself, so calm and poised, had genuinely surprised her as a mother. Teresa had felt proud then, but hearing now how her daughter faced real danger with such clear-headedness made her even more emotional. Her eyes burned. Her heart hurt for Emmy, but she was so proud it almost made her want to cry.
Her little girl had finally grown up. Emmy wasn’t some delicate flower that needed shelter anymore. She had become strong—like a tree that could stand tall through any storm.
Emmy could feel the shift in her mom’s mood. She probably thinks I’m scared, she thought. Giving her hand a reassuring squeeze, Emmy leaned in a little and said quietly, “Mom, it’s okay. Everything’s under control now.”
Andrew, though, was focused on the details. He frowned, voice steady and direct, “So if the issue was with the ecosystem’s security, is there a real fix? How can you make sure this doesn’t happen again?”
James nodded, his tone growing serious. “Our research team is working on some bio-inspired birds and fish. The idea is to release these into the environment without upsetting the balance, so we can monitor all of Emerald Island from the water to the sky. It should create a moving surveillance net.”
Andrew’s frown deepened. He shook his head and didn’t sugarcoat it. “That’s tough. If you want to completely protect the original ecosystem, you can’t mix in any tech at all. The Fijian government is stickler about environmental protection. Even if those fake animals look real, anything mechanical carries a risk of radiation or pollution. My team’s tried for years and we still haven’t cracked that barrier.”
He leaned back, eyes sharp with determination. “I’ve already been exploring options to expand into The States. Honestly, my team’s been quietly scouting locations for the past six months. If nothing goes wrong, we should have something set right after New Year’s.”
Andrew looked surprised, almost taken aback at how quick and strategic James was. Guess he’s not just some action hero, Andrew thought. He’s a strategist, always thinking ahead.
A smile spread across Andrew’s face, his gaze warmer and a little impressed. “Looks like I was worrying over nothing. You really are one step ahead, Mr. Nelson.”
