Chapter 5
That sentence hit the living room like a thunderclap. The tense silence instantly erupted into chaos.
Jackson’s face was still twisted with anger, but at my words, he slowly lifted his head-looking like he’d just been slapped awake.
“What are you saying? The person who donated bone marrow to me wasn’t Penelope-so what, it was you?”
His guess hung in the air, loud enough for Penelope to hear.
The smug look on Penelope’s face vanished, replaced by panic.
“That’s impossible, Jackson. When you woke up, I was the first person you saw…”
“Scarlett’s probably just upset about the breakup and trying to turn us against each other.”
Before Jackson could even process it, a loud thud echoed through the room.
Mr. Winters slammed his cane against the floor, absolutely livid.
“I know Scarlett. She would never lie about something like this!”
Mrs. Winters quickly grabbed Jackson’s arm.
“Fine-maybe the bone marrow thing is unclear. But what about last night? Who took care of you all night when you were drunk? You should remember that, at least.”
Jackson’s eyes flickered with evasion.
“I was completely wasted last night. I blacked out-I couldn’t even see who was taking care of me.”
He instinctively glanced at Penelope.
“When I woke up, you were there. So… it was you, right?”
Penelope opened her mouth, struggling to say something, but no words came out.
Mrs. Winters kept insisting that Jackson get to the bottom of this-that he couldn’t let a misunderstanding ruin our engagement.
I was done watching the Winters family fall apart.
I turned on my heel and walked out with my parents.
I’ve always been decisive. That very night, I pulled every last cent of our multi-billion-dollar investment from the Winters Group.
I rubbed my stiff, aching lower back, planning to head home and get some sleep to recharge-when Jackson called.
His voice was frantic.
“Scarlett, I’m sorry. I was wrong about you.”
“I checked the security footage from last night. You were the one who took care of me all night. When I woke up and saw Penelope, I just assumed it was her…”

Chapter 5
His voice was laced with guilt-and barely suppressed fear.
“Can you please not pull the investment? We’re halfway through multiple projects. If you pull out now, we won’t just lose profit-we’ll lose everything we’ve already put in.”
“For the sake of everything we’ve been through, please-just give us a way out. I’ll marry you.”
The fear in his voice grew stronger. I could practically picture him trembling as he begged me to save him.
Too bad I’m not the woman who’d throw everything away for him anymore.
“We’ve been together for so long, and I’ve never wronged you. Even with the funding you gave us, we’ve paid you back with solid returns every year. You can’t just abandon us now.”
“This is-this is deliberate sabotage!”
He finally finished talking.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, genuinely curious how someone could beg for help while still acting so entitled.
I spoke calmly, my voice completely emotionless.
“Jackson, you still don’t seem to understand the gap between our families.”
“You were built entirely by the Chesterfield family. Without us, you’re nothing. And with the amount of resources we poured into you, even a pig could’ve made money. So the Chesterfield and Winters families? We were never partners. We were your lifeline.”
“You’re the one who refused the engagement. So you’d better be ready to lose the investment too. We’re all adults here. You should understand
