Chapter 2
“I’ll bring you something when I get back.”
Julian hung up.
I sat on the balcony, staring out at the city lights. That mysterious guy in the chat kept replaying in my mind like a fog I couldn’t shake. Before 1 could process it, someone tapped my shoulder.
“Aurora.”
Lilac was already dressed. Hair done, makeup on.
The tomboy I’d known my whole life was wearing a tight bodycon dress and full glam. I barely recognized her. But I couldn’t help myself-I had
to ask.
“Lilac.”
“Are you seeing someone?”
I wanted to tell her that guy seemed sketchy. That she should be careful. But somehow, I hit a nerve. Her expression turned ice-cold.
“Aurora, we’re best friends, yeah. But you can’t just live your perfect little life and then try to control mine.”
“Aurora,” she snapped, her voice sharp. “You can’t stand to see me happy, can you?”
“I shouldn’t have taken time off work to help you with this wedding bullshit. You’re such a disappointment.”
She grabbed her bag and stormed out.
I chased after her. “Lilac!”

I pulled up to the entrance and spotted her car right away. My heart pounded as I reached for the door handle-
Then I froze.
Standing right there in front of the hotel was Julian, wearing the coat I’d bought him.
He was supposed to be out of state.
But there he was, pulling Lilac into his arms. Kissing her. Right there in public, like no one else existed. Deep, hungry, like they couldn’t get

enough of each other.
I couldn’t breathe.
I still didn’t want to believe it. That the guy in those messages was really Julian. That my fiancé was fucking my best friend.
My hands shook. I killed the engine and shrank back into the shadows, like some pathetic stalker watching someone else’s perfect moment.
I watched Julian adjust her coat, his voice gentle.
“You cold?”
Lilac smiled and shook her head.
“Not with you here.”
He pinched her cheek, grinning.
“How’d you get away from Aurora tonight?”
He laughed.
“She’s so clingy with you. How’d she let you leave?”
