What surprised Robin even more was the huge basement hidden below the house.
When she opened the door and walked down the stairs, the first thing she noticed was a giant LED screen on the wall. The screen was divided into many smaller panels, each showing a live camera feed from around Shangri–La. Every angle was covered. A full 360–degree view, with no blind spots. The image was sharp and incredibly clear.
Robin spent a moment testing the system. Before long, she discovered something even better. After the system upgrade, the cameras could now see up to about 1,500 feet away. And that was with the sky already dark.
If it were daytime, the distance might be even farther.
Satisfied with the results, Robin headed upstairs and chose the biggest, most comfortable bedroom for herself. She tidied the room a little and then stretched out on the bed.
The apocalypse might completely break out tomorrow. But whatever happened, she needed a good night’s rest first.
Living alone in a 10,000–square–foot mansion felt strange. The house was quiet. Too quiet. She felt a little lonely too.
Thinking about that, Robin rolled lazily across the soft mattress. She was just about to drift off to sleep when her phone suddenly rang. The loud sound almost made her jump out of bed.
Robin frowned and rubbed her temple before grabbing the phone. The veins at the side of her forehead throbbed slightly. She glanced at the screen. Zelda.
Robin raised an eyebrow. Oh. This should be fun.
Half of her irritation disappeared right away. She still wanted to sleep, but she didn’t mind giving those troublesome scumbags a little headache before bed.
The moment she answered, Zelda’s furious voice exploded through the phone. “Robin, you shameless bitch! You piece of trash!”
Robin had expected this. She calmly held the phone farther from her ear and replied in a lazy tone. “Wow, that’s a lot of anger, Zelda. I thought we were best friends. Why are you yelling at me like this?”
“Best friends? You call us best friends?” Zelda shouted. “Who do you think you are? Do you really think you deserve that?”
“Of course I do,” Robin said slowly. “I’m a perfect friend.”

“Stop talking nonsense!” Zelda almost screamed. “Robin, I don’t have time for your stupid games. I’m warning you now. You’d better pay the money back!”
Her voice turned even sharper. “Don’t you dare to deny those loans Noah and I suddenly owe have nothing to do with you!”
“Did I do that?” Robin said calmly. She pretended to think about it for a moment.
Then she spoke again. “Zelda, did someone hit your head or something? You and Noah took out those payday loans online. Now you’re trying to blame me? Do I look like some fool who takes the blame for everyone?”
“Bitch!”
There was a rustle of noise on the other end of the call. After a moment, Noah’s voice came through. “Zelda got a little emotional just now. Please don’t take it personally.”
Robin raised an eyebrow. “Why shouldn’t I take it personally?”
Noah sounded troubled. “I know there may have been some misunderstandings between us. But Zelda and I are really in a difficult situation now. Robin, we’re your best friends. You’re the only one who can help us.”
“Really?” Robin found this hilarious. “That’s funny. Zelda didn’t sound like a friend of mine a minute ago.”
Noah was extremely anxious. He was certain the payday loan mess had something to do with Robin. But he had no proof. And right now, arguing wouldn’t solve anything. What mattered most was getting that money.
Those debt collectors were brutal. They acted like a pack of thugs, and when they hit someone, they didn’t hold back.
“You know what Zelda’s like,” Noah said carefully. “She didn’t mean anything by it. Just don’t take it so seriously.”
He tried to make his voice sound softer. “How about this, Robin? I’ll apologize to you for Zelda. I know you have a big heart. You wouldn’t hold this against us, right?”
Big heart?
Robin almost laughed. It was the same old trick–playing mind games and laying on the guilt. But this time, she didn’t mind acting like the generous one.
She pretended to sound reluctant. “Fine. You need money urgently, right? I can help you.” She paused for a moment. “But tomorrow I’m going to the hospital for a health check. You can
