“Classmate? What classmate? Since when did you have a female classmate like that?” Cecilia pressed, her tone sharp and suspicious.
“A friend from high school. You wouldn’t know her.”
Cecilia’s eyes widened in disbelief. “And what kind of high school friend has the nerve to talk to you like that? And a woman, no less!” She simply couldn’t wrap her head around it—he was the celebrated new CEO of Cresthaven, practically a legend in the city. What kind of woman would dare to speak to him that way?
Even she wouldn’t dare!
Determined, Cecilia lunged for his phone—and, to Theodore’s surprise, actually managed to snatch it.
He watched as she deftly entered his passcode, and a bitter thought crossed his mind: This is what I get for making my own bed.
No wonder something so strange had shown up on his feed; he only had himself to blame.
Cecilia scrolled through his recent calls, eyes landing on the top entry: “Renee.” She set the phone back in his hand, her suspicion slightly abated. “So, it really is just a classmate? She’s awfully rude, though. Who talks to people like that?”
Theodore took back his phone, glancing at her. “Who did you think it was?”
“I thought…” Cecilia trailed off, refusing to finish the sentence.
Of course she’d thought it was Emma.
Only Emma would dare speak to him that way.
It was infuriating! What right did Emma have to treat him like that? And after all that, he was still willing to give her everything? Where was the justice in that? She, Cecilia, had always pampered him, coaxed him, never done more than pout on a bad day—and now even that didn’t work.
Theodore unlocked his phone again, pulling up the chat with Renee. He found a screenshot and forwarded it to Cecilia. “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
Without another word, Theodore got up and headed for the door.
“Theo! Theo, where are you going?” Cecilia called after him, desperation rising in her voice. “I have my checkup at the hospital tomorrow—will you come with me?”
“Yeah,” he replied, his voice flat and distant.
He didn’t look back.
Cecilia hurried to the door, just in time to see him disappear down the hall toward the elevators. She rushed a few steps after him, then suddenly dropped to a crouch, clutching her stomach. “Theo! Theo—my stomach, it hurts…”
Theodore turned instantly, sprinting back to her side.
Jared shook his head and muttered, “Theo, come on. You know she’s pregnant. You’re going to be a dad soon. Can’t you be a little more careful?”
