“Mr. Laurent…” Jared began, trying to explain, “We really are classmates. Even though things fell apart between me and Theodore, Miss Chambers and I have always been friends. It would be heartless for classmates to act like total strangers, wouldn’t it?”
Melvin Laurent smiled politely. “That makes sense, Mr. Jared. But, honestly, I’m not the one you should be convincing. You need Young Rossi to believe you. Isn’t that right?”
Jared’s expression darkened.
“So, Mr. Jared, I’m truly sorry. My hands are tied here. I’m just starting out with my own company—walking on eggshells, really. Young Rossi taking an interest in us is a huge deal, and I’m nervous enough as it is. The only reason I even considered working with you was out of gratitude for your past help. It was already a risky move. Now, with things getting even more complicated, I just don’t have the nerve to push it any further.” Melvin let out a long sigh. “I’m really sorry, Mr. Jared.”
With that, Melvin left, leaving Jared and Cecilia alone in the private room, staring at each other.
“Jared…” Cecilia whispered.
Jared shot her a cutting glare. “I told you not to come. Why did you insist on following me?”
Tears welled up in Cecilia’s eyes. “Then… what are we going to do?”
Jared didn’t answer.
“Who exactly is this Melvin Laurent, anyway?” Cecilia asked, her voice trembling.
“He’s Young Rossi’s chosen business partner. The guy just started his own company,” Jared explained. “He actually worked for us for a while, but he quit and started his own business.”
Cecilia shook her head, tears trembling on her lashes. “I didn’t mean to, Jared. I swear I didn’t…”
Jared, more agitated by the second, snapped, “Cry, cry, cry! That’s all you ever do! You think I’m Theo? You think I’m going to comfort you? Go ahead and try crying one more time!”
Cecilia flinched, forcing her tears back. “Then… what should we do?”
Jared looked at her, frowning. “Where did Theo’s medical report come from? Is it even accurate?”
How would Cecilia know if it was accurate? Hadn’t she already told him how she got it?
