Emma’s mentor glanced between them. “Is he a friend of yours?” he asked her.
Theodore watched her, a slight smile on his lips.
“We’re just acquaintances,” Emma said. She was tipsy, but not so drunk that she’d blurt out the word ‘ex-husband’.
Anna, however, chimed in with a sweet smile. “We’re good friends,” she said, gesturing between herself and Emma.
Emma was stunned for a moment. Anna had not only diffused the awkwardness but had done so with such kindness. It made Emma think that it was a good thing her divorce from Theodore had been such a clean, bitter break. She had no desire to be one of those ex-wives who haunts the new relationship, especially not when the new girlfriend was someone as genuinely lovely as Anna.
Anna's comment put an end to the questions. Everyone introduced themselves, and a second round of drinks began. Emma stayed mostly quiet, content to listen as her mentor and Theodore discussed music and the local dance traditions. As they talked, she focused on the food and drink. Her mentor kept praising her, which made her feel a little awkward, so she just kept eating as a polite way of deflecting.
Anna and Cindra sat next to each other, and when Anna mentioned how much she loved *Forest Lullaby*, Cindra lit up. Fueled by excitement and alcohol, Cindra launched into a passionate, animated explanation of the dance, finding a kindred spirit in Anna.
An hour later, Emma’s head began to spin, and the voices around her seemed to fade into a distant hum. The atmosphere was pleasant, though. The fireplace crackled warmly, and the room was cozy and comfortable. Emma leaned against the wall, her eyes half-closed in a pleasant, hazy state.
