She was afraid he’d snap–go full caveman on her. Panic rising, she quickly pulled her hand away and rushed toward the living room.
As the warmth and chill of her skin faded, something in Dorian hollowed out. He watched her take off— quick, panicked–hands in his pockets as he followed, calm as ever. “Arden, did Vincent hug you today?”
Dorian plopped down on the couch, legs spread out, completely at ease–like this was his place.
Arden gave him a baffled look. “No. You came all the way here at this hour just to ask that?”
She wasn’t actually trying to provoke him, but she didn’t want to drag Vincent into this either. She’d seen what Dorian was like when he lost it. It was terrifying. And this… this crossed into her personal life.
In her eyes, hugs and kisses were only meant for people who truly liked each other. If she ever had that kind of relationship, she’d admit it to Dorian directly–no games.
But she wasn’t the type to drag another man into this just to get under his skin. That’d be unfair to Vincent.
Dorian’s expression softened slightly. “Did he kiss you?”
“Dorian, are you out of your mind?” Arden snapped. “Not everyone’s like you.”
Promiscuous.
He had a lighter in hand, flipping it open and closed. When she said that, he paused. “So that’s a no?”
“No. Can you leave now?”
Suddenly Dorian seemed to be in a great mood. He picked up the glass on the table and took a drink. Arden moved to stop him, but it was too late.
He drank like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“That’s my glass. I just bought it,” she muttered. “The last one you used, I threw away. I just picked this one out because it looked nice.”
Seeing how flustered she was, Dorian looked even more pleased. Originally, he was only going to take a sip -now he drained it. “We’ve already kissed, haven’t we? What’s the big deal about drinking from your cup?”
Then, almost lazily, he added, “Don’t throw that away. Think about your department’s year–end bonus.”
That part definitely sounded like a threat.
Arden stared at him, pissed. “You’re the kind of boss who only knows how to threaten your employees.”
Dorian didn’t even deny it. “Arden, you’re not allowed to hug other men, or kiss them. If you want to do either, it has to be with me. Got that? You belong to me. Your body and your heart–they’re mine. You’re
mine.”
Arden stared at the man sprawled out like he owned the place, looking all high and mighty, wondering how the hell he managed to say that with a straight face.

Her gaze was calm, even mocking. “Dorian, do you even hear yourself? Double standards much? So it’s fine for you to do whatever you want, but I’m not allowed to live my life? Don’t forget–the day we signed the papers, you told me to stay out of your business. When came back, you said it again–not to get any stupid ideas, that I should put up with you seeing other women, and that we weren’t to interfere with each other’s personal lives. So what’s this now, Mr. Vale? You don’t think you sound ridiculous? Who I kiss or hug–what’s it to you? Do you even have the right to ask?”
Arden didn’t believe Dorian truly liked her. A man like him was all about control. They weren’t divorced yet, so in his mind, she was still his property–not to be touched by anyone else.
But after more than three years of disappointment, whatever feelings she’d had were now numb. Even Dorian himself had lost all appeal to her.
That once–dazzling first encounter? Probably just a naive girl’s fantasy of meeting her hero. Reality had shattered that dream into pieces, waking her up for good.
She didn’t want someone like him anymore. Couldn’t afford to.
So she met his absurd demands with cold indifference. Who did he think he was, laying down all these rules for her, while expecting her to stay out of his business?
Dorian was at a loss for words. He stood there, stunned.
All he knew was, seeing Arden with another man made him anxious, jealous–drove him a little crazy.
The idea of her leaving him for someone else? It scared the hell out of him. He wanted to keep her near.
He didn’t even realize he’d already fallen–deep, hopelessly, and unknowingly in love.
He spoke without thinking, “We’re still married, Arden. As long as that’s true, you can only be with me.”
“Psycho.”
“I belong to myself. I’m a person–not your property.”
Arden didn’t want to argue anymore. “Leave. I’m going to bed.”
Dorian wasn’t done. “You’re not even gonna ask if my fever broke?”
She glanced at him–perfectly fine, clearly energized, even waited for her downstairs in the car. Didn’t look sick at all. Without looking up, she said, “Whatever happens to you from now on, it’s not my problem. I won’t be looking after you anymore.”
