Chapter 250 A Slice Too Close
He spoke, deliberately teasing. “What, Arden, you don’t know how to cut a watermelon?”
She pressed her lips together. “Who says I don’t?”
Stubborn
“Then who were you looking for just now?”
“My brother,” she replied. “Definitely not you. And if he’s not here, there’s still Noah.”
Dorian raised a brow,
Caleb happened to walk back in from the balcony just then. Arden’s eyes lit
“Caleb,” she called. “Can you come here?”
Finished
Caleb instinctively glanced at Dorian first. Seeing him behave, he walked over with a smile. “What’s up?”
“Can you cut the watermelon for me?”
Caleb looked at it, took the knife from her hand. “Anything else you need cut? I’ll handle it. Go sit.”
“You just do the watermelon,” she said. “I’ll do the rest.”
Dorian let out a quiet laugh. “Didn’t you say you could do it yourself?”
“I have a brother,” she shot back. “What’s wrong with relying on him?”
Fair enough.
“Right,” heorian said. “You’ve got a brother. Congratulations.”
Celine chimed in, smug. “Exactly. Arden’s brother actually dotes on her. Unlike mine. Sometimes I feel likt I was picked up off the street.”
Dorian glanced at her. “Celine, you’re pushing it.”
“It’s true,” she said. “You were always traveling when I was little. Now I’m grown, and you’re still never around. Grandma said you’re leaving again soon. Overseas.”
“You disappeared for three years last time,” she added. “How long this time?”
Dorian leaned back lazily. “Kid stuff. Don’t worry about adult business.”
“I’m eighteen,” Celine argued. “I am an adult.”
Cassian, peeling orange with fading patience, chimed in. “Speaking of adults, Celine, did you like that guy you danced with last time?”
She looked up at him. His eyes held curiosity, not concern.

She answered stubbornly, “I’m old enough to date, aren’t I?”
Dorian replied evenly, “Have fun, just don’t stay out overnight. The guy’s fine. If you’re interested, I’ll look into him.”
“Forget it,” Celine snapped. “You can’t even sort out your own love life.”
Caleb finished cutting the watermelon.
Arden picked up a pear and kept working on the fruit tray. Ruby stayed beside her, helping quietly.
Because Ares was there, Ruby barely spoke. Ares sat on the sofa, watching her just as quietly.
Barry and Vincent came out of the kitchen. “Vegetables are done,” Barry announced.
Arden stood. “Ruby, Isla, let’s bring the meat over.”
Noah was the last to come out, leaning against the kitchen doorway. “Arden,” he asked, “where’d you put the seasoning? I’ll sauté the oysters.”
Right. The oysters.
Everyone else was eating watermelon in the living room. Arden picked a slice that looked especially sweet and walked over.
She stopped in front of him and held it up. “Thanks for your help. Have some watermelon first.”
Noah was still wearing gloves, fish in hand. He was about to decline.
But Arden rose slightly onto her toes and brought the slice to his lips. “It’s fine. Just take a bite.”
Dorian had already been watching her.
Cassian was talking to him, and he leaned over to listen. When he looked back, he froze. Arden, standing on her toes, feeding another man. Noah bent down slightly to meet her. From a distance, it looked intimate, natural, like newlyweds in their own kitchen.
“Arden.” Dorian said her name out loud.
The room quieted instantly. Everyone turned to look. Caleb’s gaze sharpened.
Arden turned, confused. “Yes? Mr. Vale?” All eyes shifted to her.
She frowned. “Is there something on my face? Why are you all staring?”
Noah lifted his head and met Dorian’s gaze. So intense it felt personal.
