Chapter 4
My brother was running late, so he sent his close friend Leland Foster ahead.
Conveniently, Leland also happened to be Ryan’s self–proclaimed archnemesis.
“So this is what she stole from you?”
Leland’s gaze landed on the pink diamond necklace around Savannah’s neck.
Then slowly, deliberately, his eyes slid over to Ryan.
“Tacky as hell.”
Ryan’s jaw clenched. Leland didn’t even blink.
He turned to me. “Your taste has really gone downhill.”
Out of habit, I bristled, ready to argue back.
He lazily raised one hand.
Dangling from his fingertips was a ruby necklace–the one–of–a–kind piece that had sparked a bidding war at the auction, ultimately bought by an anonymous buyer who’d blown past every limit.
“Consider it a hello gift.”
The necklace dropped into my palm.
I looked up.
Savannah was staring at me. For the first time, cracks appeared in her calm, composed mask.
I smiled.
“I heard you had a role model back in school, Miss Brooke. Someone with the last name Foster, wasn’t it?”
One of the juicy tidbits my brother had sent over.
Leland had once returned to his alma mater as a distinguished alumnus to give a keynote speech at a school anniversary event.
Right after that, Savannah abruptly and publicly rejected Ryan.
She told him she didn’t like trust–fund kids who lived off their family’s wealth.

Chapter 4
If she ever *did* marry into money, it would be to someone like Leland Foster–someone who’d clawed his way up from nothing and turned a losing hand into a royal flush.
“Before that happens, I’ll work hard enough to catch up to him myself.”
So inspiring. It only made Ryan fall harder.
And because of that one line, she became infamous in the trust–fund crowd.
Someone eventually brought her face–to–face with Leland at a business dinner.
True to form, he was brutally unromantic.
“She wants to use me as a stepping stone? Did she pay the fee”
After that, she left the country with another businessman from that same dinner to start a venture abroad.
Until three months ago, when she suddenly came back.
“Leland, it’s been a while.”
Savannah stepped out from behind Ryan.
Leland glanced at her briefly.
“Don’t know you.”
He took my wrist and turned to leave.
Ryan stepped in front of us, blocking the way.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing? Am I invisible to you?”
His eyes locked onto Leland’s hand around my wrist.
“Let. Her. Go.”
Leland didn’t move.
Ryan’s gaze snapped to me.
“Avia. Come here. Right now. I’ll pretend none of this ever happened.”
Leland’s expression stayed neutral, but his grip tightened slightly.
Rare to see him this uncertain.

Chapter 4
I pulled my hand free.
Ryan’s eyes lit up. He reached out, ready to pull me toward him.
In the next second, I looped my arm intimately through Leland’s.
Leland’s body went rigid.
But he recovered fast. His free hand came up to rest over mine, playing along seamlessly.
Now I had all the confidence in the world.
“Ryan, you and I are DONE. Watch how you talk to me.”
Ryan’s face darkened.
Before, I cared about him. I’d panic the moment I saw him upset.
Now? It didn’t matter anymore.
I walked out with Leland.
As we passed him, Ryan’s fingers brushed lightly against my sleeve.
“Avia… if you walk out that door with him…”
He paused, forcing out the rest with visible difficulty.
“…then we’re finished. For good.”
Silence.
Nothing.
Savannah nudged him gently.
“They’re already gone.”
