Walking out of the restaurant, my brother was already waiting outside.

He opened his arms wide, looking incredibly pleased with himself.

“So? Was that arrangement satisfying enough for you?”

Turns out, he’d deliberately sent Leland to help me get my revenge.

He really understood what we young people needed.

“Extremely satisfying. Those short drama clips I’ve been watching finally paid off.”

I started climbing into the passenger seat.

Leland grabbed the back of my collar and pulled me back.

“Don’t I get paid for my performance?”

The momentum spun me around. When I looked up, my eyes happened to catch a window on the upper floor of the

restaurant.

Ryan was standing there.

I immediately threw my arms around Leland.

He froze for a beat–but thankfully, he didn’t push me away.

“Hug me back. Quick.”

I grabbed his hand and wrapped it around my waist.

A low, husky voice rumbled near my ear, sending tingles down my spine.

“Who taught you to pay your debts like this?”

I scrunched my neck self–consciously.

“The scumbag’s still watching from upstairs. Gotta commit to the act. Bill my brother for the fee.”

The curtains snapped shut.

I immediately let go. Before Leland could react, I dove into the car and slammed the door shut.

He stood by the roadside for a while longer.

The night was too dark to make out his expression.

But once he got in the car, he stayed silent the entire ride.

I didn’t have the energy to make small talk anyway–I was busy reviewing financial reports my accountant had sent

over.

Apex Holdings was a company *I* helped Ryan build. It wasn’t his alone.

Over the past three months, he’d been embezzling massive amounts of company funds to win Savannah’s favor.

I’d never been a pushover–not since I was a kid.

When I loved him, I could overlook everything.

But now that he’d trampled all over me again and again? I was going to make him settle every last cent.

By the time I finished compiling the master spreadsheet, the car had just pulled into the Foster estate.

My family lived out of state, so I had no choice but to crash at Leland’s place for now.

“You’re staying in your old room.”

My brother and Leland had been close for years. When I was younger, I used to tag along with them constantly.

Back then, for convenience, Leland had set up a guest room just for me.

I hadn’t been here in forever, but somehow the room was still intact–even the layout hadn’t changed. It looked exactly the way I’d left it last time.

Spotless, too. Clearly someone had been cleaning it regularly

“Leland Foster.”

On a whim, I tilted my head and looked at him.

“You’re not secretly in love with me, are you?”

He had a sharp tongue. Normally, he would’ve roasted me by now.

But this time, he just stared directly into my eyes.

“What makes you think I’m not?”

Wait–what?

I was stunned.

I’d been trying to mess with *him*, but now *I* was the one floundering.

Damn. Experience really does win.

I fumbled to close the door.

He raised his hand and blocked it.

“I like you.”

Before I could respond, he backtracked.

“Actually, forget it. That was too rushed. I’ll tell you tomorrow. Get some rest.”

He pulled the door shut for me.

The next morning, when I woke up, Leland was already gone.

I figured last night’s confession was just payback for me teasing him. A joke.

I didn’t think much of it.

Because Ryan called me.

He and his friends had been drinking until late. Savannah drove him home.

When he woke up this morning in a daze, he suddenly realized all my things were gone. Our photos had all been cut in half.

A slow, bitter ache crept into his chest. By the time he processed it, he’d already dialed my number.

When I picked up, he stayed silent for a long time.

“If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”

“Wait.”

His voice was hoarse.

“Where did you go? Where are your things? Why are all the photos cut up?”

I wasn’t in the mood to be nice.

“Were you too drunk yesterday to hear me clearly? Let me repeat it for you: I’ve liquidated all the jewelry you gave me during our engagement and deposited it onto that card. Our engagement is void. We’re done.”

I started to hang up.

Panic made him blurt it out.

“Why? Why are you calling off the engagement? Is it because of Leland Foster? Did you fall in love with him?”

I almost laughed at the audacity of him trying to flip this on me.

“Think whatever you want.”

Then I added, as an afterthought:

“Oh, and you should start getting your affairs in order. I’m coming into the office in the next couple of days. I need you to give me a full accounting of the company’s finances.”

I hung up.

And then, for good measure, I blocked him on everything.
