Chapter 7
Elaine was so terrified by that rebuke that she collapsed onto the floor, lips trembling, unable to get a single word out.
Victor Kane took a deep breath and turned to Dominic, his eyes filled with disappointment. “Dominic, do you have any idea who she is?”
“I didn’t tell you the truth at first because I didn’t want to put pressure on you.”
“I planned to reveal everything after the engagement.”
“But you… God, what have you done…”
Dominic’s fingers trembled slightly. He opened his mouth but couldn’t make a sound.
I stood up, smoothed out my coffee–stained dress, and spoke calmly. “Mr. Kane, there’s no need to make this harder on him.”
“Since Kane Enterprises doesn’t want me here, I’ll leave.”
I turned and started walking toward the door.
“Wait!” Dominic’s father rushed forward, practically begging. “Serena, this is the Kane fammy’s fault. Please–give us a chance to make this right!”
I stopped and glanced back at Dominic.
His face was pale, his eyes filled with shock and confusion.
“A chance?” I let out a soft laugh. “Mr. Kane, do you really think Kane Enterprises is still in a position to ask ME for chances?”
The moment those words left my mouth, the projection screen suddenly lit up, displaying a breaking financial news alert:
[BREAKING: Kane Enterprises Stock PLUMMETS 30%-Market Value Evaporates by Nearly Ten Billion Dollars!]
The executives erupted into chaos. Some literally collapsed back into their chairs.
Dominic’s head snapped toward the screen, his face going even paler.
I calmly pulled out another phone and made a call. “You can stop now.”
One minute later, the stock price curve on screen suddenly stopped falling–then slowly began to climb back up.
The conference room went dead silent. Every single pair of eyes locked onto me.
Like they were staring at some kind of monster.
Dominic’s father took a deep breath, then suddenly spun around and slapped Elaine hard across the face.

“You disgrace brat! Get on your knees!”
“Apologize to Ms. Winters right now!”
The slap sent Elaine spinning. Blood trickled from her mouth.
Seeing her pitiful state, Dominic’s heart ached. He rushed forward to catch her.
“Dad, we can talk about this! Why are you hitting her?”
I watched coldly from the side.
Dominic’s usually handsome face was now flushed red with anger.
The way he protected Elaine reminded me of all the times over these past months he’d turned down my invitations–because of her.
“Mr. Kane, forget it.”
I casually adjusted my sleeves.
“Since your son is so determined to protect her, she doesn’t need to apologize.”
Dominic’s father’s face turned livid. He raised his hand and slapped Elaine again.
This time she dropped straight to her knees. The sound of her kneecaps hitting the floor made everyone in the room flinch.
“Dominic! Get out of the way!” his father roared. “Do you have any idea who you’re protecting?! Do you have any idea who you just pissed off?!”
Dominic stood his ground stubbornly, arms spread wide like a mother hen protecting her chick.
“I don’t care who she is! You can’t just treat people like this!”
He turned and glared at me, eyes burning with fury.
“Serena Winters, just because you have connections doesn’t give you the right to humiliate people! This is shameless! You’re nothing but a bully!”
On the projection screen, Kane Enterprises‘ stock price continued to fluctuate slightly–a constant reminder of what had just happened.
I walked up to Dominic.
The faint scent of his cologne drifted into my nose–the one Elaine had given him. I remembered.
Three months ago on his birthday, I’d given him a watch worth ten million dollars.
He’d politely thanked me–and never wore it again.
But that cheap cologne Elaine gave him? He wore it every single day.
