Exit the Catfights Enter the Empire novel Chapter 36

Evelyn looked up and saw the sheer delight written all over Julian's face.

It hit her—he was genuinely interested in her romantically. She realized she needed to clear the air immediately.

"Julian, do you know exactly how I'm connected to the Farrell family?"

He blinked, confused. "You're his honorary granddaughter."

"No. I'm not. I'm his granddaughter-in-law. Xavier is my husband."

"What? Xavier is your husband? But the two of you..."

"Seems bizarre, right? Why would he set his own grandson's wife up on a blind date?" Evelyn let out a bitter laugh. "I'm sure you've heard the rumors about my marriage."

Julian pressed his lips together. He had indeed heard the nasty gossip surrounding his cousin's marriage.

Everyone said the Lawler heiress was a ruthless, manipulative social climber who caused the death of Xavier's first love, only to somehow win over Karl's favor and secure her spot in high society.

Even though the Lawler family was technically wealthy, in their elite circles, they were viewed as tacky new money—completely beneath them.

Whenever people brought it up, he never joined in the trash talk, but he certainly hadn't held any respect for the notorious Lawler heiress either. He never in a million years imagined that the woman he was crushing on was actually her.

Julian felt a knot form in his stomach. A part of him desperately didn't want to accept it.

Seeing the crushed look on his face, Evelyn felt awful. "I really am sorry about today."

Julian forced a tight smile and shook his head. "Why are you apologizing? It's not your fault. Come on, let's just walk around for a bit."

Noticing her surprised expression, he chuckled. "I promised I'd keep you company, so I have to do my job. Besides, I haven't been back in the country long, and I'd like to check out the city."

...

After leaving the restaurant, Xavier headed straight back to the office.

The moment he stepped into the executive suite, Ronan rushed over.

"Mr. Farrell, Zandra just called. She said Vickie got drunk and is throwing a tantrum, demanding to see you."
