Once Evelyn caught her breath, she asked, "Why were you out and about in the first place?"
"I wasn't alone, I was with Calvin. The dealership finally got a Bugatti Veyron in stock, and he wanted me to go pay for it. Who knew this would happen on the way? Now everything's delayed."
Rhonda sounded incredibly frustrated. Just as she finished speaking, her phone rang.
It was Calvin.
The moment she answered, his impatient voice blared through the speaker. "Where are you? I asked you to come pay for my car. Why is it so hard?"
Evelyn frowned and leaned in. "Mom got into a car accident on her way to the dealership."
"What a disaster! I told her to just give me the bank card, but she insisted on playing the hero and coming herself. Now look what happened—she's delaying my car purchase!"
Hearing his callousness, Evelyn's temper flared. "Calvin, do you even hear yourself? Mom got into an accident because of you!"
"Did I ask her to do it for me? What a joke." With a sharp click, Calvin hung up.
Seeing the call end, Rhonda immediately panicked. "What is wrong with you? Can't you just speak nicely to him? Look, you've made him mad again. Hurry up and get over there to buy him that car."
Evelyn glanced down at the bank card in her hand, a sudden realization hitting her. "Mom, you said the family didn't have the cash for a car. Where did this money come from?"
"Remember that set of pink diamond jewelry you left at the house last time? I sold it. That was enough to cover the cost."
"Mom, how could you sell my jewelry? That was my wedding gift from the Farrell family!" More importantly, it was one of the very few things Xavier had personally handed to her.
She treasured it. She rarely wore it, but during a banquet on her last visit home, she had taken it off and forgotten to pack it. She had planned to pick it up in a few days. She never imagined her own mother would sell it—just to buy Calvin a car.
Evelyn's face went pale with anger.
"So what if I sold it? If you didn't always have such an attitude toward him, refusing to pitch in with money or effort, would I have touched your things? Evelyn, don't think I don't know what goes through your head. You've always hated your brother. You want to see him fail!"
The more Rhonda yelled, the more worked up she got, until she suddenly gasped for air and passed out.
"Mom!"
