Chapter 13 Refusing to Share a Room with Him

Chloe was way too calm. So calm that even when he’d left her alone in Norway for half a month without any contact, she hadn’t gotten mad at him. Not even once.

And now she was even considering sleeping in separate beds so she wouldn’t disturb his sleep.

Oh, how perfect. My hand–picked trophy wife–so damn considerate, never causing me any trouble.

Adrian fought hard to contain the rage burning in his chest, barely managing not to explode right in front of Chloe.

Taking a deep breath, he reminded her as calmly as possible, “We’re married, Chloe.”

“Yeah, I know.” Chloe nodded.

In just two more months, this marriage would be over anyway.

That’s exactly why she wanted to end things on good terms with Adrian–to give this contract marriage a dignified conclusion.

Adrian rubbed his temples wearily, asking again with forced patience.

Chloe pressed her lips together, sensing her own limited patience wearing thin. She repeated her earlier answer—

“I don’t sleep well. I’m afraid I’ll disturb you.”

The same answer again. Adrian could even hear how dismissive and casual her response sounded.

His dark gaze fixed on Chloe’s calm expression, and he made an irritated “tsk” sound.

She watched him tug at his collar in frustration, hands on his hips as he paced back and forth.

Chloe had no interest in staying to watch him pace. She hugged the blanket and turned to leave.

But just as she reached for the door, Adrian blocked her way.

Chloe looked up at him. Adrian’s eyes were dark and intense.

After secretly loving him for ten years and being married to him for almost three, Chloe could tell Adrian was right on the edge of losing it.

Adrian had a terrible temper, but since no one ever dared to provoke him, no one had the privilege of seeing him truly

angry.

She thought she was about to face his wrath, but when those dark eyes met hers, he somehow managed to suppress his rage.

“Chloe, you know I don’t have the energy to guess what’s going on in a woman’s head. If you’re angry, just say it to my face instead of acting unreasonable and making me guess what you’re thinking over and over again.”

Chloe stared at Adrian quietly, almost amused by his words.

When she didn’t respond, Adrian felt his irritation growing stronger, his carefully controlled emotions ready to explode.

“I don’t like women who make me guess games. The reason I married you in the first place was because you were obedient and easy–going, wouldn’t cause me trouble.”

He clenched his jaw. Chloe understood his implication perfectly.

He was saying she was causing him trouble now, that he regretted choosing her as his wife.

Chloe pressed her hand to her chest, hidden by the blanket.

“Do you want me to say I’m angry at you?” She sighed and asked.

Adrian froze.

“Fine then. I’m angry. Very angry. Why did you leave me alone in Norway for half a month without a word?”

Adrian looked stunned, instinctively opening his mouth to argue back, but Chloe cut him off.

“And then what? You’re going to say you went back to save someone, that it was a matter of life and death, that I shouldn’t be unreasonable, shouldn’t lack compassion, shouldn’t distrust you, shouldn’t be jealous for no reason.”

Adrian fell silent, his brow furrowing unconsciously.

He heard Chloe let out a mocking laugh, her voice carrying a hint of sarcasm.

“See? I’m wrong when I’m angry, and I’m wrong when I’m not angry. So tell me, what exactly should I do?”

Because he realized Chloe was right.

Chloe fell silent and didn’t speak again.

Maybe she was saying she wasn’t angry, but she was still giving him the cold shoulder.

Whatever. This time he’d been the one to break his word first.

He shouldn’t keep pushing her on this issue.

“Fine, have it your way.” He gave in first. “How many days?”

Chloe didn’t immediately understand what he meant and instinctively asked, “What?”

“How many days of sleeping separately?”

Chloe fell silent again.

Adrian’s sudden reasonableness was actually disappointing.

Chloe took her blanket to the guest room.

Though it was called a guest room, it wasn’t much different from the master bedroom.

Even though no one had slept there, the housekeeper still regularly cleaned and changed the bedding.

So Chloe didn’t need to do anything extra–she just lay down with her blanket.
