Chapter 18 Why the Denial?
She’d meant it as a brush–off. But somehow, her answer pleased Adrian. The storm clouds on his face cleared slightly, and his eyes held a hint of amusement.
“But you didn’t tell them I was your husband either,” he persisted.
Adrian was acting extremely strange today. An insignificant topic, yet he kept hammering at it. This wasn’t like him at all.
The restlessness in Chloe’s chest threatened to boil over.
Her frown deepened, but she managed to rein in her agitation. “We have less than two months before this ends. No point creating complications. When people ask later, I’d just have unnecessary explaining to do.”
Despite her efforts to control herself, Adrian caught the impatience threading through her words.
He felt stunned. The amusement in his eyes flickered to bewilderment.
He’d almost forgotten about their three–year contract. A contract set to expire in two months. On their third wedding anniversary.
After nearly three years of marriage, he’d grown accustomed to Chloe’s presence, to their daily interactions.
This marriage hadn’t brought the rejection and resentment he’d initially expected. Instead, he adapted well to this arrangement.
Their relationship became so comfortable that he almost forgot there was a contract at all.
But seeing how casually Chloe brought it up, how precisely she remembered the timeline… She must be counting down the days to freedom.
For some reason, her attitude left Adrian deeply unsettled.
He studied her calm expression and let out a cold laugh. “You sure remember that date well. Can’t wait to divorce me?”
Sensing the anger in his tone, Chloe paused and looked at him with confusion.
She didn’t understand why Adrian was angry. Wasn’t this what he wanted?
As for why she remembered so clearly–their agreement had been signed the day they got their marriage certificate.
She used to remember it because it was their wedding anniversary. She’d always held onto it, hoping they could celebrate together. Though Adrian never remembered.
Now she still remembered it clearly, but for a different reason –she wanted it over. She desperately wanted it over.
Chloe didn’t react strongly, continuing to eat while answering. “It’s just a fact. We really do only have two months left.”
Her casual, indifferent manner made it seem like the most ordinary conversation.
Adrian pressed his lips together, but the sharp energy radiating from him was so intense that even Chloe felt overwhelmed by the pressure.
This pressure made her barely suppressed agitation surge again.
She really needed to see a therapist soon. She didn’t want to become emotionally unstable.
Just then, Chloe noticed Marcus coming back, his face clouded.
She said evenly, “Didn’t you come to see Marcus? Well, he’s back.”
Clearly, their conversation hadn’t gone well.

Chloe didn’t react strongly, continuing to eat while answering. “It’s just a fact. We really do only have two months left.”
She really didn’t want to spend time with Adrian. Plus, she figured he was acting on a whim and would probably cancel anyway, so she might as well pretend she hadn’t seen it.
After all, she’d tried making plans with Adrian before. He’d say yes at first, but then always bailed because of work or some Natalie thing. Even when Natalie was in another country, he still found time for her.
That was probably the difference between caring and not caring.
After Adrian ditched her so many times, Chloe just stopped 6/7
A cheating scumbag getting divorced–he deserved it.
Adrian didn’t move. His gaze was sharp, unreadable. “Who said I came to see him?”
Chloe froze, surprise flickering across her face. “Then… are you sick?”
She thought of Foster Medical–Foster Group’s top private hospital in New York, staffed with the nation’s best doctors and reserved for VIPs and elites.
If Adrian were really sick, why wouldn’t he go there? Why come here?
Adrian was speechless.
“Why don’t you consider that I came specifically to see you?” he asked through gritted teeth.
This time, Chloe looked even more surprised.
Adrian could easily read that surprise.
So she’d considered every possibility except that he’d come for her?
Chloe’s face quickly went back to normal.
