Chapter 6 Are You Mad at Me or Chloe?

Pretty soon, people passing by started slowing down, staring and whispering.

Gabriel Carter–Adrian and Natalie’s childhood friend- stepped out of the driver’s seat, dark sunglasses on.

The second he spotted Chloe, his smile disappeared.

“Oh. Chloe’s here too.”

Chloe just gave him a polite nod.

“Gabriel’s here, Adrian. We should get going before we block traffic,” Natalie said.

She grabbed Adrian’s hand and shot Chloe a look loaded with meaning, a smirk tugging at her lips.

But Adrian didn’t move. He just kept staring at Chloe, his expression unreadable–like he was trying to see what she was hiding behind those calm, unbothered eyes.

Her cool composure only seemed to piss him off more.

Gabriel finally pulled off his sunglasses and walked toward her,

his tone carefully polite.

“Chloe, I’m really sorry. I didn’t know you’d be back today, otherwise… Well, there’s no room in the car.”

His Rolls–Royce Wraith was a four–seater. His girlfriend was already in the passenger seat. The back seats were clearly meant for Adrian and Natalie.

Chloe didn’t buy the fake apology for a second. She’d always known Gabriel never really liked her.

That snide comment on Natalie’s blog telling Adrian to just marry Natalie? Yeah, that had Gabriel written all over it.

Whether the excuse was real or just convenient, Chloe wasn’t about to make a scene.

“It’s fine. My Uber’s almost here. You guys go ahead.”

“Chloe…”

Gabriel looked like he wanted to say more, but her ride pulled

“My car’s here. See you later.”

She reached for her suitcase, but a hand suddenly caught her

Startled, Chloe turned and met Adrian’s intense stare.

“You-”

Adrian started, but Natalie’s voice cut him off.

“Come on, Adrian! We’re totally blocking traffic here.”

Adrian’s frown deepened, clearly annoyed, but his eyes stayed locked on Chloe’s unreadable face. He opened his mouth again, then shut it, words failing him.

“You getting in or what?” the Uber driver called, impatient.

Chloe smoothly pulled her hand free and gave them all a wave —even Adrian.

“I’m leaving now. Bye.”

She slid into the backseat. “Let’s go,” she told the driver.

The window rolled up, shutting Adrian out along with his complicated, ice–cold stare.

“Let’s go, Adrian. Marcus and the others are already waiting,” Gabriel urged, carefully gauging Adrian’s dark mood.

“Fine.” Adrian’s tone was frigid as he finally tore his gaze from

Chloe’s car and climbed into Gabriel’s.

Inside, the atmosphere was tense. Adrian sat in silence, eyes fixed on his phone, radiating such coldness that the temperature in the car seemed to drop.

Gabriel kept sneaking glances at him in the rearview mirror before lowering his voice.

“Adrian, maybe we should… invite Chloe too?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “No,” he bit out.

Natalie shot Adrian a quick look, then turned to Gabriel with a sweet smile.

“Oh, Chloe’s not really into our kind of parties anyway. Don’t put her on the spot.”

Her words sounded kind, but the venom underneath was obvious–painting Chloe as someone who thought she was too good for them.

Gabriel caught the hint immediately. Annoyance flickered in his eyes, but with Adrian right there, he kept his tone in check.

“Right. Who are we compared to some Harvard genius?” His voice dripped with sarcasm.

“We’re just a bunch of spoiled rich kids who only know how to party. Of course we’re not good enough for Chloe.”

He gave a bitter laugh, trying to brush it off as a joke, but Adrian’s frown only deepened.

“Cut the crap,” he snapped. “Are you pissed at me or at Chloe?”

Both Gabriel and Natalie froze, their smiles stiffening.

Natalie hadn’t expected this. Someone who’d chosen her over Chloe was now openly defending Chloe, even making his own friend look stupid in the process.

Gabriel, though, was genuinely afraid of Adrian. Hearing that‘ sharp question, he rushed to cover himself.

“Come on, Adrian, I was just joking! How could I blame Chloe? I really do think she’s incredible. So young and already with a double PhD from Harvard, plus Professor Lane’s star student. None of us can touch that.”

Only then did Adrian’s anger ease a little. He gave a low sound of approval.

“That’s true. Compared to her, the rest of you are academic failures.”

The pride in his voice made Natalie’s stomach drop. Panic 5/7

She stared at the unconscious smile tugging at Adrian’s lips whenever he mentioned Chloe, and alarm bells went off in her head.

“Right, right. Only your IQ can keep up with Chloe’s,” Gabriel said quickly.

Adrian’s mood seemed to level out, and Gabriel relaxed, growing chatty again.

“Speaking of which, Adrian, you went to Harvard too. Someone like Chloe must’ve been pretty famous on campus. You never ran into her?”

Adrian raised an eyebrow, looking thoughtful.

“She probably kept to herself, focused on her studies.”

“So you’re saying Chloe was just a bookworm?” Natalie suddenly covered her mouth and giggled sweetly.

Her words wiped the calm off Adrian’s face. Displeasure flashed in his eyes.

But seeing her innocent smile, he let it slide, assuming she hadn’t meant anything. Still, he corrected her.

“I meant she’s someone who loves learning.”

He wasn’t trying to scold her, but the way he defended Chloe was obvious–and it stung.

“Yeah, I’ve always been so jealous of girls like Chloe,” Natalie whispered, eyes watering. “But I’m just too stupid and too sickly to ever measure up.”

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she sank deeper into self–pity, resentment curling around every word.
