“I originally came today intending to explain things clearly to the Noir family. The person I’ve always liked is-”
“Mr. Barclay?”
An untimely voice suddenly interrupted from the stairwell.
Julian was carrying an armful of gifts upstairs when he spotted the two of them standing near the landing.
“What a coincidence. Miss Iris is here too?”
He looked genuinely surprised to see her, but quickly switched into his usual role as Ares’s self–appointed wingman.
“Mr. Barclay came here today to break off his engagement with the Noir family!”
“My boss is just that kind of person. He has absolutely no interest in any daughter of the Noir family. Whether it was Chloe Noir before or the newly found heiress afterward, he wasn’t interested in either of them! He’s incredibly loyal. The person he likes is-”
Seeing Ares’s expression grow darker with every word, Julian finally sensed something was wrong and hurriedly shut his mouth.
Wait.
Why was Miss Iris here?
Hadn’t the entire restaurant been reserved for the Barclay family today?
Iris nodded calmly and pointed toward the private room. “Got it. My mom is in that room. Just leave the gifts there.”
“Your mom?”
“Mhm.” She looked at him. “I’m the newly found heiress.”

The gifts slipped from Julian’s arms and crashed onto the floor. His mouth dropped open
wide enough to fit a tight bulb.
Watching his utterly useless assistant sabotage him yet again, Ares seriously considered transferring him to a remote overseas branch.
“Let’s head back inside,” Ares said. “Aunt Eleanor is waiting.”
“You really aren’t going to break off the engagement?” Iris looked at him.
She wasn’t merely a daughter of the Noir family.
She had many other identities.
Many other responsibilities.
Love had never been part of her plans.
She didn’t even know how she was supposed to interact with Ares.
Nor was she certain whether, after discovering all her secrets, he would become an ally or
an enemy.
Just as she was wondering whether she should persuade him to call off the engagement for everyone’s peace of mind, a large hand gently patted the top of her head twice.
“You don’t need to overthink it.” His voice was low and reassuring. “I’m the one pursuing you. All you need to do is give me a chance. You don’t have to change anything or make sacrifices for my sake.”
The two returned to the private room just as the dishes began arriving.
Throughout the meal, Eleanor couldn’t help noticing the subtle change in atmosphere between them.
A knowing smile appeared on her face.

Under the table, she secretly sent Richard a text message.

[Honey, I think Ares really likes Iris. And iris doesn’t seem to dislike him either. This might actually work out!]
After lunch, Iris received a notification from school telling her she needed to return and pick up a few things.
Eleanor immediately seized the opportunity.
“Why don’t you let Ares take you? I need to stop by the office anyway.”
And just like that, Iris was practically bundled into Ares’s car.
Meanwhile, Ares spent a few minutes upstairs listening to Gordon’s report on the restaurant’s recent performance and future plans.
After seeing Eleanor off, Iris settled into the back seat and checked her phone.
“Let’s go.” Ares climbed into the car.
Just as he was about to close the door, a hand stopped it.
“What a coincidence, Iris. Mr. Barclay? You’re here too?” Chloe Noir stood outside the car, pretending to be surprised. “Where are you going?”
Julian answered politely.
“Miss Noir, we’re heading to Capital Preparatory Academy so Miss Iris can pick up some things.”
Suppressing her irritation, Chloe tucked a carefully curled lock of hair behind her ear and turned toward Ares, presenting what she considered her most flattering profile.
“I need to go to school too. Iris won’t mind if Mr. Barclay gives me a ride, right?”
Before Iris could respond, Chloe placed a hand on the door and started climbing into the
car.

“Once she sat beside Ares, all she had to do was take advantage of a few bumps in the road
to create some accidental physical contact.
After spending so much time on her appearance today, there was no way he wouldn’t be charmed.
