“What’s going on? Why are you being so mysterious? Where are you going? Can’t I come along and see?”
Chloe wrapped her arms around Eleanor’s and spoke in a spoited, coquettish tone, hoping the familiar tactic that had always worked before would convince her mother to let her
come.
This time, however, Eleanor was completely unmoved.
“Chloe, be good. Tomorrow I’ll take both of you out somewhere fun. But today, I’m taking Iris to meet someone.”
Knowing Eleanor’s personality, Chloe immediately realized there was no chance of changing her mind. She could only respond with a reluctant “okay” before returning to her
room.
On the drive over, Eleanor was in an exceptionally good mood. The entire ride, she chatted excitedly with Iris about Ares Barclay.
“We met him a few times before you came home. He’s really an excellent young man…”
“Mom, what if he’s meeting us today to call off the engagement?” Iris decided to prepare her mother in advance.
Eleanor was clearly very pleased with Ares, but Iris already knew he intended to break off the engagement. She didn’t want her mother to be blindsided and disappointed later.
“Call off the engagement? Of course not!”
Eleanor stared at her in disbelief, as though she’d never even considered such a possibility.
“His grandfather would never agree to something like that so easily.”
Seeing her reaction, Iris wisely dropped the subject.
The driver soon pulled up outside Lee’s Kitchen.

Gordon was busy in the kitchen, so the person who greeted them was the assistant manager. The moment he saw Iris, surprise flashed across his face.
Eleanor assumed he was simply curious because he had never met her before.
Placing an arm around Iris’s shoulders, she smiled proudly.
“This is my daughter, Iris Noir. If she comes here in the future, just put everything on the Noir family account.”
Then she lowered her voice and turned to Iris.
“Don’t let the simple name fool you. The food here is amazing. You’ll have to try some
later.”
The assistant manager stood there completely stunned. Wasn’t this Miss Rissa? How had she suddenly become the Noir family’s daughter?
Suppressing his confusion, he led them upstairs.
“Mr. Barclay said something came up unexpectedly, but he’ll be here shortly.”
Eleanor nodded. “That’s fine. We arrived earlier than planned anyway.”
“Mom, I still think that if Ares comes here to break off the engagement, we should just agree.”
Eleanor looked at her helplessly and flicked her forehead lightly.
“You silly girl. Why do you always assume the worst?” She stood up. “I’m going to the restroom. Take a look at the menu.”
Watching her leave, Iris sighed.
It wasn’t that she expected the worst. It was simply that Ares Barclay already had someone he liked.
Meanwhile, inside Ares’s car sat two completely different gifts.

One was a tasteful champagne–colored gift box.
The other looked unmistakably feminine, decorated with a pink ribbon tied into a bow.
“Boss,” Julian asked curiously, “why don’t we just cancel both engagements today? Break things off with the Noir family this morning, then head over to the Young family this afternoon and end that one too?”
“The Young family’s daughter is still underage. Right now, the priority is the Noir family.”
The Noir family’s daughter had already come of age and had just finished her exams. Sooner or later, both families would arrange for them to get acquainted. It would be better to refuse now and personally apologize to the Noir family.
Julian nodded in understanding.
“I understand. But I heard the Noir family recently found their long–lost daughter. Shouldn’t you meet her before making a final decision?”
Miss Iris was exceptional in every way.
Still, considering her background…
A former heiress cast out by the Sutton family would likely have a difficult time winning the approval of the Barclay family.
How wonderful it would have been if Iris Noir had truly been the daughter of the influential Noir family.
Unfortunately, according to his investigation, that wasn’t the case.
She merely happened to share the same surname.
Her biological family was the Noir family from the outskirts of Ashford County—a poor household that had struggled to make ends meet for years.
“The Noir family’s daughters have nothing to do with me.” Ares gazed out the window. “The only person on my mind is someone else.”

To Julian, it sounded like nothing more than a passing infatuation.
But Ares knew otherwise.
Sometimes, the moment you meet someone, you already know there can never be anyone else.
Julian went to park the car and retrieve the gifts.
Ares headed upstairs first and found the private room he had reserved. He raised his hand and knocked twice.
